Aaron Arthur
Nelson Sr.
Mar 20, 1950 — May 20, 2025
A boy with a big heart was born in the small town of Singer, Louisiana. Aaron and Ethel Nelson welcomed Aaron Arthur Nelson as the oldest son and third child into their growing family of thirteen on March 20, 1950. He was known as Arthur to all who loved and knew him, and he carried the quiet demeanor of his mother throughout his life and an affection for sweet treats. As a child, it was common to see Arthur playing with his dog, Jelly Bean, helping his father plant crops on Good Friday, and enjoying church services at Macedonia Baptist Church, where he was baptized at twelve. Arthur was a quiet student in high school but active in the track club. After graduating from Singer High School in 1968, he set his sights on the big city. One week after graduation, Arthur moved with his sister Rose, who had already established roots in Houston. Upon arriving in Houston, Arthur immediately took to the food scene and job opportunities. Getting to know local eats served him well when he began dating Bonnie Nelson.
Arthur met Bonnie when she was visiting her sister, who was a neighbor. Soon after their meeting, Arthur and Bonnie "Missie" began courting and were known to try all of the local eateries with which Arthur fell in love with. On July 8, 1972, Arthur and Bonnie were married in Houston, surrounded by family and friends. As they began their family with the births of Aaron in 1974 and Dominique in 1978, Arthur worked at Finger's Furniture. While working endless hours at Finger's Furniture, he still found time to be an engaged father and husband, planning weekend activities for the family and exposing them to the city he had grown to love. After nineteen years of service, he retired from Finger's Furniture seeking greater opportunities. In a courageous career shift, he then embarked on a new career in IT at GC Services, where he remained employed for over twenty years, retiring in 2014.
In retirement, he continued to be an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, enjoying dating his sweetheart Missie and spoiling those grandkids whom he referred to as Sunshine (Simone), Lil' Jr (Aaron III), and Ju Ju (Julián). In his spare time to remain active, he became a crossing guard through HISD, greeting children and families daily, often providing treats for the children before holiday breaks. Arthur is known for spoiling those he loved and cared for with their favorite treats. While serving the Alcott Elementary community as a crossing guard, Arthur was called home on Tuesday, May 20th. The unexpected loss has left the community that loved him in shock, yet grateful for how he made everyone feel special and loved.
He leaves cherished memories to his wife Bonnie "Missie" Nelson, two sons, Aaron Jr. (Tamika) and Dominique (Olga), and three grandchildren, Simone Marie, Aaron Arthur III, and Julián Sosa Nelson. Childhood moments remain with his surviving siblings Frankie, Cheryl, Linda, Joe, David, Edward, Donnie, Cardie, and Ricky. Arthur will be united with his beloved mother, Ethel, father, Aaron, sister Rose, brother L.C., and other family and friends.
