Barbara Lynette Gilbert

On Friday, August 7, 2026, the trumpet sounded, and Sis. Barbara L. Gilbert “Answered the Call”

Barbara Lynette Gilbert was born on May 26, 1957 in Shreveport, Louisiana, to the union of Earl and Vera Willis Gilbert. Soon after, the family relocated to Houston, Texas. Barbara grew up in the neighborhood of Sunnyside. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Mt. Moriah MB Church by the late Pastor H. Perry. The family later joined the Ebenezer MB Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Herman Jacobs and the late Pastor Alex Moshay. Under the currant leadership of her Pastor Rev. Gregory Ussin, Sis. Barbara Gilbert continued in her walk of faith at the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Barbara attended BH Grimes Elementary, Albert Thomas Jr. High, and was a proud graduate of Ross Sterling Sr, High. Barbara pursued a nursing assistant training and was employed by Hermon Memorial Medical Center; she later worked as a Private Duty Home Health Care Giver.

Barbara was kind, fun-loving, and easy-going. She loved her family deeply. She enjoyed having company and was generous with her time and treasures. She was a good listener, great confidant, and secret keeper. She loved to read, especially her bible. Barbara had a beautiful voice and would often sing her favorite hymns. Her pastimes were watching TV and talking on the phone. Barbara looked forward to her daily calls with her brother Terry. When asked what she was doing, her response was always, “Sitting here looking Beautiful.”

When Barbara found herself in need of medical care, she was blessed to have the round-the-clock care of her devoted mother, Vera Gilbert, along with her dedicated Sis. Patricia Gilbert and family members Reginald Hemphill Sr., Dominique Hemphill, and Mariah Gilbert. Her medical limitations did not steal her Joy; she did’t complain. Her health care provider was V and M and she was very fond of her recent care givers Veronica Ramos and Dinnamon Swanson.

Sis. Barbara Gilbert lived her Faith, she said her prayers, read her bible, received the Sacament of Communion, and cheerfully paid her tithes and offerings. She continued to support the choir and was a member of the Pastor Support and Beautifying Committee. She loved her pastor and church family.

Barbara was beloved and cherished and was a devoted Aunt to Reginald Hemphill Sr., Dominique Hemphill, Chante’, Mariah, Ja’Marcus, and Frank Jr. Gilbert. She was the great-aunt to Reginald/Dejah, Natalia and Logan Hemphill and Aungela Gilbert.

Barbara leaves to cherish her precious memory her beloved mother, Vera Gilbert; her dedicated sister, Patricia Gilbert, Beverly Price, Her brothers, Terry Shepherd/Merdis and Kenneth Gilbert/Savanna; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Barbara also leaves to cherish her memory her Pastor, Rev Gregory Ussin, Sis Mary Ussin, and the entire Ebenezer Church family.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father, Earl Gilbert; her brother Frank Earl Gilbert, Sr.; and her sister Earline Gilbert Wilmore.
