Obituary

Betty Ruth Robinson-McGuffie was born on September 2, 1942, in LeMoyen, Louisiana, to the late Bessie Irvine Robinson and Robert Robinson. The eldest of two children, Betty was a natural nurturer from an early age— loving deeply, caring faithfully, and forming bonds that would last a lifetime.

At the age of twelve, Betty accepted Christ and was baptized by Reverend Bernard Gipson at Great Bethel A.M.E. Methodist Church. Her relationship with God became the cornerstone of her life, shaping her character, guiding her decisions, and fueling her unwavering love for others.

Betty spent much of her childhood in St. Francisville, Louisiana, living with her beloved grandmother. She graduated from John S. Dawson High School in 1960 and soon thereafter married Edward McGuffie. From this union, three children were born: Edward McGuffie, Jr., Stefon McGuffie, and Deadria McGuffie. As a young mother, Betty devoted herself fully to her family, creating a home grounded in love, faith, and togetherness.

In June 1967, Betty relocated to Houston, Texas—a move that would mark a defining chapter in her life. Houston became the place where she raised her children, built lifelong friendships, and established deep spiritual roots. Upon joining Holman Street Baptist Church, Betty found more than a place of worship—she found family. It was there that she formed a treasured, lifelong friendship with her best friend, Zelda Miller. Through that bond, the Small-Miller family lovingly embraced Betty as their own, surrounding her with fellowship, laughter, and unwavering support.

Betty's joy was evident on Sunday mornings as she lifted her voice in the choir and on Sunday afternoons spent fellowshipping with her cherished "Houston family." Church was not just a place Betty attended— it was a community she poured into and a source of constant joy in her life.

Alongside her devotion to family and church, Betty built a distinguished 39- year career as a Medical Technician Assistant. She dedicated 19 years of faithful service to St. Luke's Hospital before retiring. Even in retirement, her heart for helping others never wavered, leading her to continue working at Hillcroft Medical and later LabCorp until she completed her professional journey.

Following her retirement and the passing of her beloved mother, Bessie, Betty returned to New Roads, Louisiana. There, she united with Little Rock Baptist Church, where she continued her steadfast service to God and was ordained as a Deaconess—faithfully living out her calling through service and compassion.

In 2022, Betty returned to Houston and once again found her way home to Holman Street Baptist Church. During this season, she poured her love into caring for her great-grandchildren, spending meaningful time with family, and enjoying road trips filled with conversation, laughter, and togetherness.

Betty's life was a testament to love in action. She expressed care through presence, prayer, and especially through her cooking. Her kitchen was a place of comfort and fellowship—where smothered chicken, hot water cornbread, gumbo, seafood boils, spaghetti, and Friday night fried fish brought people together and made everyone feel at home. Betty was a devoted mother, grandmother, godmother, caregiver, and friend—a woman whose reliability, warmth, and faith touched countless lives. Above all, Betty loved the Lord and loved people. Her legacy of faith, family, service, and cherished relationships will forever live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
