Obituary

Bruce Duane Anderson was born on August 20, 1950, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as the eldest among five sisters and two brothers to Melvin and Geraldine Anderson. His early years were characterized by the typical mobility of a Navy family, until they settled in San Diego, California, where Bruce's roots firmly took hold. A proud graduate of Lincoln High School, Bruce's basketball journey commenced, leading him to the University of Arizona and a stint with the Detroit Pistons, a testament to his unwavering passion for the sport. Beyond the court, Bruce pursued higher education fervently, earning his undergraduate and Master of Business Administration in Rehabilitation Counseling from San Diego State University, an achievement he held dear. His commitment to education extended beyond himself, inspiring his family to follow suit. Bruce's professional life reflected his diverse talents and compassion. From ship welding to counseling at-risk youth, he left an indelible mark. As the Houston Regional Director for Texas Disability and Rehabilitative Services, he concluded his career, leaving a legacy of service and dedication.

In Vernell Beasley, Bruce found not only his soulmate but also his lifelong companion. Their union, which began at the University of Arizona, flourished into a partnership of 54 years, and is blessed with two daughters, Ena and Dominique. Family was paramount to Bruce, evident in his weekends filled with laughter, surrounded by loved ones. He enjoyed coordinating outside activities for his nieces and nephews and sharing countless memories of growing up with his mother and siblings. He never missed an opportunity to go fishing, and some of his best memories are on the boat with his granddaughter, Chaise. He enjoyed spending time in his garage building or "rigging" whatever new wood-working project, be it from necessity or his imagination. Who doesn't remember the custom-built fish tank, the wall-to-wall bookshelf, or the elaborate life-size Christmas decorations? Fourth of July was not complete without a noisy display of fireworks or a "trashcan bar-b-que". It brings to mindthe time we almost set the neighbors' roof on fire. Thank God, he always had a garden hose on hand.

Bruce's proudest accomplishment was his 35 years of sobriety, a journey that transformed not only his life but also those around him. As the patriarch of the family, he set the standard for what it means to be a husband, brother, and father. As an influential member of AA, Bruce thrived in encouraging others in their own sobriety and serving the AA community, while making lifelong friends. Always willing to share his story with others, he became well-known in meetings throughout San Diego, Dallas, and Houston. A towering figure at 6'8", Bruce's presence was commanding yet gentle. Bruce learned love from his mother; his home was always open, offering solace and support whenever needed. He was affectionate, but never wavered from giving his direct and to-the-point opinion or advice. 'Uncle Bruce' took great pride in watching the many accomplishments of his nieces and nephews. He reveled in how far his family had come and the battles they overcame. He was big in stature with a gentle heart.

Throughout the years, he and his wife loved to travel, taking on new adventures as often as they could. From the Alaskan glaciers to Caribbean beaches, he loved planning the trips just as much as he loved going. Even on their relaxing trips together, they would have a story that would bring joy, laughter, and maybe a report of an occasional injury. His laughter will be truly missed.

Bruce Anderson was baptized in San Diego, California, at Mt. Erie Baptist Church. Although he was unable to attend regularly, he enjoyed streaming Bethel's Family Church services at home and listening to Gospel music with his wife and family.

On Sunday, May 5th, 2024, Bruce D. Anderson was called home into the loving arms of Christ our Lord and Savior. Bruce is preceded by his father (Melvin Anderson), mother (Geraldine Anderson), and sister (Ameerah "Pamela" Anderson). He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Vernell Anderson of 54 years of marriage; two daughters, Ena and Dominique Anderson, and one granddaughter, Chaise Manning. His loving sisters and brother of Lansing, MI, Melva (William) Wilson, Geraldine Anderson, Charlotte Anderson, and Darrell (Verlean) Anderson; Sharon Denkins of Charlotte, NC; and Joseph (Gina) Anderson of San Diego, CA. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends and extended family who will miss his calls and visits. Though his physical presence may be gone, his spirit lives on in the hearts of all who were touched by his kindness and generosity. Until we meet again, farewell, dear Bruce.
