Obituary

Our beloved Catherine Hodrick Jones was born unto Sedalia and Charlie Hodrick on May 30, 1926. She was the 4th of 12 children from their union, and maintained a close relationship with four paternal half siblings. Catherine enjoyed country life in Tunis, Texas, playing with her father and siblings. As young girl, she developed a relationship with God while attending Old Bethlehem Baptist Church in Caldwell, Texas. Her childhood included memories of helping on the family farm, picking cotton, playing in the woods, and cooking meals for her siblings. Catherine completed her high school education and went to Franklin Beauty School in Dallas where she became a licensed beautician.

In early 1946, she caught the attention of James Jones during a carnival. He offered her a ride on his bicycle and that ride evolved into 49 years of marriage which ended with James' death right before their 50th wedding anniversary. Her union with James produced five children. Initially, they began raising their family in Third Ward, but eventually settled in Sunnyside.

Catherine's faith journey continued to grow as she became a long-standing member of Blueridge Baptist Church where she attended until her health prevented her from going. Not only was she God fearing, but a hard worker helping to support her family as a maid and a "dayworker" before becoming an entrepreneur and opening her own beauty salon. Catherine's dedication and love for her family was invaluable. She made many sacrifices to ensure her children and grandchildren were cared for. Catherine not only financially and physically supported her immediate family, but also extended her support and assistance to her parents and siblings during their times of need. As the matriarch of the family, her unconditional love and selflessness included closing her beauty salon to care for her grandchildren full-time, opening her home to her siblings at various times of their lives, as well as traveling to care for ailing siblings.

If you needed her, she was there for you. However, she did not brag about this and remained humble while walking out her faith through doing good deeds. Catherine's dressing, dumplings, dinner rolls, pies, and cakes were made from scratch and the highlight of all holiday meals. Until she was well into her 80s, she cooked daily for her family, so even if you stopped by unannounced, there was something on the stove to eat.

Catherine was well known throughout the neighborhood for her morning walks. She enjoyed working in her garden and watching her favorite soap operas. You knew not to disturb her when she was watching "her stories". Traveling was another favorite past time. Trips with her children and her church family seniors filled her later years. Reading the Bible and listening to gospel music filled her life with joy. Catherine was well dressed, independent, and would tell you how she felt. She was honest, supportive, and firm about doing the right thing and living the right life. Her strength remained on display as she battled kidney and breast cancer, a true survivor.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Jones, her parents, Sedalia and Charlie Hodrick, Birdie Hodrick, Charlie Hodrick Jr, Johnny Hodrick, Ozell Hodrick, Verlie Hodrick, Eva Warren, Clarence Hodrick, Robbie Bradley, Freddie Hodrick, Clyde Hodrick, Vera Hodrick, Clifford Richard Hodrick, and Stella Thomas.  She leaves to cherish her memory, two sisters, Cora Strait (Upland, CA) and Dr. Ollie Ritchey Nix (College Station, TX) her five children Ruby Huff, Charlie Hall, Carlton Jones (Hope), Brenda Jones, and Elston Jones. She also leaves 10 grandchildren: Kobie Huff (Celia), Joe-Sydney Benson, Christopher Galloway (Michelle), Diane Richardson (Claude), Vanessa Lee, Charissa Davis (Sean), Kia Huff, Andrea Jones, James Jones, and Cedric Hall. Catherine leaves a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends to mourn her death. Catherine's impact on her family will be everlasting and while we miss her, our tears also represent the love we have for her. She has ascended back to her maker rejoicing. A job well done!
