Obituary

Clabron "Dooney" Johnson, Jr. was born on April 15, 1940, in Houston, Texas to his parents, Clabron Johnson, Sr. and Lessie Mae Johnson.

Clabron accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at 11 years old at the Hill Zion Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Baker, Houston, Texas.
His education included Brock Elementary, Washington Jr. High and Booker T. Washington High School where he graduated as Salutatorian in 1958.

Clabron continued his education at Prairie View A&M University where he majored in Mechanical Engineering.  He participated in varsity school sports including baseball, basketball and field track, and he lettered in all three sports.  His baseball career as pitcher was ended because of a knee injury.

Clabron's long years of service began during the summer as a Busboy at the Houston Country Club and was promoted to Waiter a few weeks later.  This continued on weekends until January 1961.

In January 1961 Clabron began working as a Locker Room porter at Sharpstown Country Club and continued his education at Prairie View University.  On mornings he commuted daily to school and returned to work in the afternoon.  He worked his way up from Locker Room Porter to Country Club Manager by 1966.  He successfully managed the Sharpstown Country Club for 10 years. A long list of successful accomplishments includes Manager, Quail Valley Golf Club (1700 members); Board Director and President, Oyster Creek Rotary Club); Manager, LaPlayer Restaurant; General Manager, Angelo's Fisherman's Wharf.

In May 1987 he accomplished his dream , ownership of his own restaurant, Clabrone's in Sugar Land, Texas.  He later changed the name to CJ's Restaurant where home-cooked meals, family dining and a businessman's luncheon and catering parties were served from one person to 1,000 people. During his management and ownership and ownership of the above-named businesses, Clabron had the privilege of catering for a large number of civic, government and social organizations. Because of the influx of numbers of restaurants in the nearby Stafford area Clabron was forced to close CJ's Restaurant.  He was soon hired as Manager at Weston Lakes Country Club.

In 1999 Clabron was called upon by the owner of Shadowhawk Golf Club to get them started in the new facility.  He accepted the new position as Locker Room/Food & Beverage Manager. During time there, he appreciated advice from President George W. Bush who told him to always do his best no matter the problem; others will notice his devotion and God will reward him. He remained at Shadowhawk Golf Club until he retired in 2022 after 23 years of dedicated service.

Clabron's philosophy was to follow the Lord's command:  to treat others kindly, with love and encouragement as you want others to treat you; throw in a little laughter (and even a terrible joke, as he often did to produce a smile).  His loud and boisterous laugh was infectious! He often enjoyed giving financial help to someone at a grocery store, secretly pay the bill at a restaurant, reward a child who reported a good school grade, etc.

Clabron joined Mount Corinth Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Dr. A. Louis Patterson, Jr. and remained under the leadership of Pastor Alan Lamar Patterson.  He was appointed to Leader of the Senior Ushers by Pastor A. Louis Patterson, Jr. because of his friendly smile and welcoming demeanor. In addition, Clabron's participation in church activities included: Executive Leadership Council, Kid's Kamp (formerly Vacation Bible School as Counselor), Men's Choir, Soul Winners Action Team and  WINSday in the Word.

Clabron's soul was secured, and his faith anchored in the Lord.  He entered his heavenly home on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

Clabron is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wilbert Johnson (Melba); two sisters: Letha Johnson Vurns and Marie Adams; brother-in-law, Robert Paul Norris and best friend, Bobby Grisby.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beautiful, devoted and loving wife of 59 years, Erma Jean "EJ" Johnson; three beautiful daughters:  April Lynette Simon, Josephine Roberts and Marilyn Hines (John), (Josephine and Marilyn by his previous marriage to Trula Gums); sister, Clara Funches; grandchildren: Madelyn Odums, Eboni Roberts, Marcus Odums (Jennifer), and Madison Danyelle Simon; great grandchildren: Maci Odums, Sir Marcus Odums and Malachi Odums; sister-in-love, Gloria Norris Tapscott; bother-in-love, Alphonse Norris, Jr. (Delores); special friend, Lillie Mae Ballard; guardian children:  Jessica Perkins Goode, LaMaria Goins and J.P.
