Jan 12, 1943 — Dec 19, 2023
Claudell Garrett entered this world in Houston, Texas on January 12, 1943, as the third child of Aaron Garrett and Ardella Harmon Garrett and God's gift to us. On December 19, 2023, he left this earth as our gift to God.
Dell, as he was lovingly called was educated at Blackshear Elementary, James D Ryan and Jack Yates High Schools. He also attended Texas southern University. He was a Boy Scout and Pearl Thomas, Den Mother.
Dell enlisted in the United States Navy, promoted to the rank of Sergeant (E-5) and was engaged in the Vietnam War Era. During his four years in the service, he obtained his electrician certification and was honorably discharged.
As an entrepreneur he delivered the Houston Press newspaper on a bicycle he was given by his parents for Christmas at 8 years old, later becoming an employer by paying his sister, Audrey, to wash dishes for him when his turn came. He used his wages to pay her, buy Stacy Adams shoes and his beverages. During high school he worked at a now closed restaurant as a bus boy.
Once home from the military he worked as an electrician for a local utility company for several years. He began working for Shelton W. Greer during high school alongside his father, Aaron. After his time as an electrician, he began full employment as a building roofer, moving on to warehouse worker and ending his 50-year career as an inventory supervisor. He retired during the 2020 pandemic for health reasons.
In 2009, he was diagnosis with cancer and was a 14-year survivor. He managed his health with the grace and mercy of God, telling anyone who would listen about his journey.
Dell was baptized at an early age at Mary Olive MBC and remained a member. He was President of the Usher Board for many years, encouraging his wife to become one also. He was ordained as a Deacon September 29, 1996. As a member of the Independent Association Ushers Auxiliary, he was the Instructor and a member of the State of Texas Ushers, Nurses & Greeters of Houston. He was the State Treasurer until his death.
