Obituary

Dennis Washington was born on January 20, 1957, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Houston, TX. He was the second child and oldest son born to five children. He passed away peacefully on Friday, March 28, 2025 at the age of 68.

He attended M.W. Dogan Elementary, Lamar Fleming Middle School, and graduated from Kashmere High School in 1975.

Dennis roamed the streets of Fifth Ward and Wayne Street as a teenager. He was given the name King Fish by Bro. R.T. McCarter, because after every heavy rain, Dennis was catching tubs of crawfish from the ditches. He loved playing baseball and basketball at Tuffy Park. He was the checkers champion, winning nearly every game. He enjoyed summers swimming at the park.

He married Deborah Major on April 12, 1978 and from this union were born two daughters; Shamara Denise and Detra LaShon. He was employed at J.R. Hobbs as a driver for many years. He worked at Chesley Plumbing Supply for fifteen years as a truck driver and also held the position of counter salesman until his health failed.


He grew up in St. John Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor E.L. Fields. He sang in the choir, participated in Sunday School and  BYPU. He was baptized by Pastor Fields at an early age.

He united with New House Restoration, Power & Praise, Pastor James Daggs, for 8 years.

He united with St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Reginald Sidney in 2023. He faithfully served there until his health failed.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Abbott, and his sister, Mary Ann Washington, niece Martricia LaShon Allen, nephew Donald Ray Washington, Jr. He leaves to cherish his precious memory and celebrate his homegoing, his mother, Joella Fields; daughters, Shamara Denise Major and Detra LaShon Tolden (Reginald); one sister, Pearlean Terry (Reginald Lavan); two brothers, Donald Ray Washington, and Curtis Washington (Pamela); three grandsons D'Quailn and J'Meiel Washington, Jerrin Holloway, one granddaughter, Tia Gilbert, one great daughter, Ari Ward, and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, close friends, co-workers and friends from Chesley Plumbing Supply
