Dwight Wayne
Stein
Nov 7, 1956 — Dec 19, 2023
Dwight Wayne Stein was born November 7, 1956 in Houston, Texas to Robert Browning and Geneva Lois Stein. He was the youngest of the three children. He had one brother, Johnny Stein and one sister, Linda Stein. His parents and his siblings preceded him in death.
He was educated in the Houston Independent School District and attended Piney Point Elementary School. Following school integrations, he was among the first black students to attend and graduate from Robert E. Lee High School in 1975. He enrolled at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. While at Lamar University he joined the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Just weeks prior to his passing Dwight was blessed to meet with a few of his fraternity brothers to spend a night of playing cards, playing dominos, and reminiscing about the good old days.
Dwight transferred from Lamar to the University of Houston after getting a job at the U.S. Postal Service in June 1976. He worked full time and went to school part time. He graduated from the University of Houston in 1980. He worked in the Post Office for 47 years. Throughout his tenure, he distinguished himself as an excellent worker and leader. He received many promotions in the budget offices. He received the Area Vice President Award for excellence in 2012. He reached the position of financial analyst for the entire southern district.
Little did he know that he would meet and marry his third grade teacher's niece while working in the post office. Dwight and Janis met through mutual connection in the Post Office and were happily married for 30 years. This union would produce two children, Braxton Wayne Stein and Chesley Savoie Stein.
Dwight had a passion for Bar-B-Qing. He started with one pit, then he added another pit, and still not satisfied decided to add another pit. It didn't matter what the weather outside was, rain or shine, he would say "today is a good day for Bar-B-Q". Everyone knew how Dwight felt about being outside and standing by his pits.
Another one of his passions was bowling. Dwight owned five bowling balls and sometimes used all five in one night. Dwight was a competitor, even though he always said he bowled for the fun of the game. He received an honorable mention in "The Bowling News" newspaper for bowling over a 700 series. Dwight was very proud of that honorable mention.
Dwight was also a real estate broker. He enjoyed helping families in finding the right place. He even brokered a good deal on the house his family lives in now.
Dwight had a passion for his corvette. He said all corvette owners waved to each other, so every time he passed another owner, he gave a big wave and held an even bigger smile. Dwight had a great sense of humor and a real love for life.
Dwight was the person that everyone got along with. He didn't like arguing with anyone, but he was quick to laugh with everyone. He knew every family member and he loved attending the family reunions.
Dwight and Janis were members of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Frisco, Texas.
Dwight Wayne Stein was called to heaven unexpectedly on December 19, 2023 in San Francisco, California. He leaves to cherish his memory, one son, Braxton Wayne Stein and daughter-in-law, Hailey Stein; one daughter, Chesley Savoie Stein, and his beloved wife, Janis Savoie Stein and a host of family and friends
