Elzina
Davis
Jul 30, 1934 — Mar 30, 2025
Elzina Bailey Davis, the third child of Booker T. and Iotia Bailey was born in Midway, Texas on July 3rd 1934. At home, she was usually tasked with cooking and baking where she honed her love of good food and making people happy with the work of her hands. She attended A.V. Lee High School in Midway where she loved playing basketball. It was at a school event that she met her life partner, Leonard Davis, who attended Douglas High School in Centerville, Texas.
The couple dated and became engaged before Leonard left for the U.S. Air Force in 1954. When he returned, the couple married in a small porch ceremony on September 29, 1957 in Midway. They soon moved to Houston, Texas. There, Elzina and Leonard owned and operated their own restaurant, Davis Diner in the Third Ward area, while she attended Texas Southern University majoring in child development. Elzina devoted her life to children. She worked and operated Chick-A-Dee Nursery in the South Union community for forty-one years. It was there that she touched the lives of hundreds of children over the years with her soft and loving approach to early childhood development.
Her patience also lent well to her secondary career of cake decorating at Kroger Stores where she worked for several years before retiring. Elzina understood the virtue of hard work. Her hobbies such as floral design, catering and being a Mary Kay Cosmetics sales representative were also passions of hers.
Elzina was a diligent worker in Christ's vineyard at South Union Church of Christ where she labored since 1963. For years, she helped facilitate the monthly Cake Bake Sale in support of Southwestern Christian College as well as being a longtime member of the United Ladies of Houston which began under the tutelage of her mentor, Sis. Azzie Lee Jackson. Sis. Davis frequently used her culinary talents to help host numerous events at South Union over the years. Elzina was a lover of people and had a gentle spirit that will never be forgotten.
Our beloved Elzina leaves behind her loving husband, two daughters, Linda Carol Penn(Fred) and Stacy Elaine Flemming(Cedric), four grandchildren, Cedric Lewis, Davis Bernard, Gabrielle Elaine and Symone De'Nay and a host of nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her siblings, Fred Bailey, Booker T. Bailey, Jr., Avella Nealy, and Doris Sueing.
