Obituary

The world became a better place on May 12, 1929 in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana when proud parents the late Reverend Ed Timmon and Elvira McGaskey Timmon welcomed their baby girl whom they named Emily.  She was the 7th of 11 born to this blessed union. They raised their children to love the Lord, work hard, and share with others.  Emily received a "touch from God on the mourners bench", (her words) at a very early age.  That touch was the beginning of her relationship with God that would footprint her lifetime. God gifted Emily with a beautiful singing voice, so along with her sisters as quartet singers they often accompanied their Father as he traveled to preaching engagements.

In 1947 in Natchitoches, Louisiana she married Edward Flanagan, Sr. Seven years later in 1954, with 5 children in tow they moved to Houston, Texas.  Later 2 more children were born from this union.

Along with rearing her children she studied and earned her Nurses Aid Certification.  However, her longevity in employment was with the Houston Independent School District (HISD) working throughout several schools.   Notably, Albert Thomas was the final school where she celebrated her retirement after 33 exemplary years of service.

Mother Emily Flanagan, also affectionately known as "Emma" loved the Lord with all her heart!  She was short and small in stature, but stood tall to fulfilling her purpose of serving God and God's people. Her passions were cooking and singing, and she shared both continuously as she really never met a stranger,-- everyone was a brother, sister, or friend.

Mother Flanagan loved going to church, encouraging preachers, and serving wherever there was a need.  She was a shining example of love and concern; a strong woman of faith, a consistent prayer warrior, and a dedicated Christian servant.  She was introduced and received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost at the Church of God In ChristReformation in 1968 by her co-worker, Fayrene Spurlock.   She later joined Tamina Church of God In Christ, in Tamina,TX under the leadership of Superintendent Osha Randle, Sr. She adored his wife, Missionary Geraldine Randle and the sanctified people in the fellowship. Formally Tamina COGIC, now Jones Memorial COGIC, under the leadership of Elder Vernard Williams is where Mother served on the Mother's Board, Deaconess Board, as Secretary, a faithful Sunday School member and YPWW participant.  The church grew vastly thus forcing Elder Randle to establish a Houston location. That church was birthed at 1802 Hussion Street, Third Ward Texas,--Mother's home!  Because of her witnessing, sharing Christ, and loving like Christ mandates many of her neighbors joined too. It's still thriving today as True Vine COGIC under the leadership of Superintendent William L. Hennesy, Sr.

With a hunger to worship alongside her children, she joined where they were at the Williams Temple Church of God In Christ, under the leadership of the late Bishop Robert E. Woodard, Sr. She is hailed as a dedicated member over 51 years! She was dedicated to the Missionary Department, Mother's Board, YPWW, The Busy Bee's, Sunday School Teacher Class #6, Youth Choir Matron, Deaconess, Prayer Band member, Ever Ready Circle, The Keenagers and Prayer line conferences.  Most notably, Mother was awarded "Mother of the Year"; and, was inducted into the Jurisdictional Church Mother's Board for Texas Greater Southeast First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction under the leadership of Bishop Johnny Tates and granted by Dr. Lena I. McClain.

As Mother's health began to spiral downward over this past year, she was still impressing most with her unwavering "FAITH".  Schelet, Roland, Shannon, J'Miyah, Eleanor, Lisa and Tara you did an amazing job of "around the clock care". Thank You!

In the afternoon on December 23, 2023, Mother Emily Flanagan's spirit was received into the bosom of her heavenly Father as her life assignment had been completed and as promised, --- her promotion to Glory!
