Essie Mae was born October 24, 1944, in Winnfield, LA to Hubert and Aileen Davis. She was the youngest of five children. Essie's mother passed when she was three years old and then her mother's sister, Pinkey and Andrew Pennywell raised her. Essie attended school in Winn Parish and graduated from Pine Crest High. Essie loved plants, animals, and rodeos. Her favorite pet was Buddy who brought joy in her life. Essie lived in Houston most of her adult life where she worked and retired from the Texas Public School System.

Essie met and married her former husband, Sammy Drain and two children were born to the union, Shannon and Shelby Drain. Essie was a member of the New Genesis Missionary Baptist Church in Houston where er pastor was her nephew, Pastor Michael Currie and her cousin, Rev. Sylvester Rogers, associate member.

Essie is preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Aileen Davis, her adopted parents, Andrew and Pinkey Pennywell, daughter, Shelby Drain, two siter, Edna Jean McGee, Ethel Lean Currie her brother, Curtis L. Davis.

Leaving to mourn her passing is her son, Shannon Drain (Regina) of Houston, TX, her sister, Magie Nell Oostey of Austin TX, four grandchildren, Leslie Hodge, Shannon Jr., Shelby and Emmanuel. She has ten great grandchildren and a host if nephews, nieces, cousins and the New Genesis Missionary Baptist Church family.
