Obituary

On August 23, 1934, Florence Marie Lacy was born to the parents of James Lacy, Sr, and Eula Mae Lacy.  On August 23, 2025, Florence made four scores and 11.  It was at that time that God dispatched the angelic angels to her.   The Angels waited to get the final call for transition.  Florence was ready; she received her final rites on August 31, 2025, with a smile.   On September 2, 2025, at 6:50 p.m., she got the call for a change of address.

Florence was introduced to music at a very early age through her father, James Lacy, Sr.  Florence attended St. Nicholas Catholic School from the 2nd to the 12th grade, where she received music training in Latin under Sister Mary Clotilde.  In 1951, Florence and her family relocated to the Sunnyside area, where she became part of a significant movement to establish a church for African American Catholics in the area.  In 1952, St. Francis Xavier, located on the corner of Reed Road and Chocolate Bayou, was born.  Her family, along with nine other families, worked hard to raise the needed funds to build a church that they could attend and call home.

Florence's music career continued to flourish.  She received several awards, recorded Records, and acknowledgments from Priests and Bishops in the Houston/Galveston Diocese. She sang under the following Music Directors over her 80-plus years in the ministry:  Elaine Fletcher, Floyd Reeves, Agnes Green Thompson, Asa McClellan, John Bell, Jerry Given, Fayetta Allen, Gerard Ingam, and Michael Stevenson.

Florence retired from Houston ISD as a Kitchen Worker in 1992.   She worked regularly as a volunteer for the Lenten Fish Fries, served as Group Leader for the Bible Study Class on Mondays, assisted the pastor by leading devotional prayers to the Blessed Mother on Tuesdays, participated in the Novena in Honor of St. Joseph on Wednesdays, and prompted the Litany to the Sacred Heart on Fridays.   Her greatest gift was uplifting the hearts and souls of the congregation and family members at funeral celebrations through her beautiful, rich voice.  She was steadfast and genuinely dedicated to her church.  Florence was a 50-plus-year member of the Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary, Court 138, and St. Francis Xavier 55 Plus Club under the leadership of Brother Knight Herbert "Red" Archer.

Florence is preceded in death by her husband, Louis C. McChristian; mother, Eula Mae Holley; father, James Lacy, Sr; sister, Ola Mae Lacy Bell; brothers, James Lacy, Jr, and Joseph Holley; and her biological daughter, Sweeney Jesse.   She leaves to mourn her daughter, Wanda Johnson (Charles), God-daughter, Vanessa Valiare, and her five grandchildren (Keith, Glenn, Crystal, Christina, and Jasmine Johnson).  Her nieces, Krystle Holley-Tahria and Shellye Broughton,  nephews, Sean Bell and Scott Holley, and her great-grandchildren.  She also leaves to mourn her Prayer Partners, Deacons Michael Jenkins and Deryl Drenon, her Pastor, Very Rev. Father Michael L. Thompson, SSJ, and Mrs. Theresa Remy.   Most importantly, she leaves to mourn a fantastic caregiver staff:  Clora Scott, Nanette Wokeman, Feliciah Henderson, Pauline Gay, Debra Armstrong, Jarrett Armstrong, Julia Dean, and Jamal Dean, Jr.
