Obituary

Gladys Othella Marie Lewis Washington, affectionately called Jane by her parents, the
fifth of eight children of the late Silas and Reubie Lewis was born on April 27, 1930 in
Leon County, Normangee, Texas. She graduated from Carter G. Woodson School
where she was an outstanding basketball player on the team.When not attending
school, she would help out around the house with the farm animals or would pick cotton
in the fields.
She was baptized at an early age at Shiloh Baptist Church in Normangee, Texas and
later on after moving to Houston, Texas joined Little Zion Baptist church, under the
leadership of the late Rev. B.T. Ross.
In 1947, she married the love of her life, Carl Washington, Sr. and to that union, eight
children were born. She did domestic work for many years, as well as security for
Nabisco in Houston, Tx. She looked forward each year during the summer to her
vacation with her husband in Las Vegas. She also enjoyed weekend trips to Galveston
or Surfside with the grandchildren to go fishing. She was loved by her community.
People would stop by the corner of Calhoun and Idaho to check on her. She was a
strong, fearless, and independent woman to the very end.
Gladys left this world, in the comforts of her home surrounded by loved ones, and
entered into eternal life to be with her Heavenly Father on November 2, 2023.
Gladys is preceded in death by her parents,Silas and Reubie Lewis; husband, Carl
Washington;daughters, Shirley Jean Washington and Reubie Washington; brothers,
James Lewis, John L Lewis, Charles Lewis, Leslie Lewis, Lowell Earl, and Malroy
Lewis; sisters, Arlevia Lewis and Sarah Hall; great grandson, Jermaine West, Jr. She
leaves to cherish her memories, daughters Annie Goodwin (Leslie D.), Gwendolyn
Wiley, and Carlene Dupree; sons Charles R. Washington, Carl Washington, Jr.
(Yolanda), Kenneth Washington (Yolanda); 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 27
great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Johnnie M. Lewis; brothers-in-law, Johnny
Washington and Edgar Washington (Carmen). She further leaves to cherish her
memories are a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
