Gloria (Jones) Burton "Sammie Lee"

A Beautiful Journey

Gloria Jones Burton, a loving and strong soul brought life to this world with her arrival on the beautiful day of August 7, 1938. She was born in Brenham, TX to the proud parents Melvin Sam and Ruby Mae Jones their only child.

Sammie Lee began her education at Gregory Elementary in Houston 4TH Ward community and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.

Sammie Lee accepted Christ at an early age at St. John Missionary Baptist Church located at 2222 Gray St., Houston, TX.

Sammie Lee was blessed with five children: Jack Burton III, Marjory Gail Burton Robinson, Melvin Burton, Gaylord Burton, Darwin Roberts and a special daughter Jacqueline Burton Hall.

Sammie Lee was employed with HISD as a reading specialist teacher for 12 years.

On Monday, September 7, 2026 Sammie Lee was called home. She was receded in death by her parents, Melvin Sam & Ruby Mae Jones; two sons Jack Burton III and Darwin Roberts.

Sammie Lee leaves to cherish her memory two daughters Marjory (Steve), Jacqueline; two sons Melvin (Vivian) & Gaylord. 8 grandchildren Desni (Rachel), Trovon, Mario, Dementris (Canoh), Chamaine, Penny, Shemika, Melva; 6 great grandkids, Allie, Desni Jr, Nalani, Donovan, Maize and Nadia; 4 great great-grandkids Noah, Carys, Wes & Alys and a host of cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.
