Harold L. Sylvester was born on Wednesday, March 29, 1933, to the late Joseph and Bessie Caroline Sylvester in Crowley, Louisiana. With his wife Marsha Jones-Sylvester by his bedside where she did home hospice care under Star of Texas for over 2 ½ years. She held his hands and laid face to face as he was called to eternal rest on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 4:40 am.
Harold was a graduate of Ross High School in Crowley LA. He proceeded to join the Army in New Orleans on Wednesday, 16th of April1952 where he was stationed at Sam Houston (San Antonio TX), Ft. Riley Kansas, and separated with an Honorable Discharged on Friday, 16th of April 1954.
He moved to Houston TX in 1954 and attended Texas Southern University in which he received his bachelor's degree in 1959. During the time while attending college he was united in matrimony to Flossie Douglas in 1955 at St. John Baptist Church on Gray, officiated by Reverend N. C. Crain where he was a member. To this union two children were born, one girl Sandra Sylvester and one son Keith Sylvester. Later in life he received two grandchildren from his daughter Sandra, one boy and a girl.
Harold was hired at the United States Postal Service in 1956 as a distribution clerk. The Post Office was located on Capital & Fannin. Later it moved to 401 Franklin St. and became the Main Post Office. While employed he was promoted five times. Once as a LSM Clerk; Supervisor of Mails; Station Manager of River Oaks Station; Assistant Tour Superintendent of Tour I and later promoted to Tour Superintendent of Tour II.
During his career he recommended mail processing develop teams to travel and train EIQWL functions in five locations: Dallas, TX, San Antonio TX, Atlanta GA, Memphis TN & Los Angeles.
Harold went back to Texas Southern University from 1972-1976 to pursue another degree. He received his Juris Doctor Degree from the School of Law in 1976. Now known as Thurgood Marshall School of Law.
He was then appointed Manager of Employment Involvement QWL (Quality Work Life). Where he trained all managers in the entire Houston Division EIQWL.
Harold was one of several plaintiffs to file a class action lawsuit against the United States Postal Service, Houston Division for discrimination and eventually received monetary benefits.
Harold served 35 years and 8 months which included 2 years of military service at the United States Postal Service. Harold loved the game of golf. He played golf every chance he had to play. On Saturday, October 17, 1987, Harold did every golfer's dream. He hit a Hole-In-One on the seventh hole at Glenbrook Park. This was the talk for quite some time.
Then in 2006, the day he always dreamed and cherished happened on Thursday, August 31. He was united in matrimony to Marsha G. Jones. Marsha had one son Henry B. Jones III whom he loved and cherished as his own. They were united at Memorial Herman Hospital. The service was officiated by Pastor Walter August, Jr. of One Church @ Bethel's Family. The entire family and a few co-workers were there to witness this ceremony. They were united eighteen years. But had been together on an off again over 27 years before marriage.
Harold precious memories will always be cherished by his wife, Marsha Jones-Sylvester, step-son, Henry B. Jones, III, M/M Joe & Alma Harris and M/M Clifton & Linda Adams of New Orleans LA all-best friends for life, sister-n-laws, brother-n-laws, cousin-n-laws, a host of nephews, nieces', other relatives and countless friends. Harold was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Bessie Sylvester, two brothers, Lindsey and Joseph Sylvester, mother of his children Flossie Sylvester, three golf buddies: Wesley Harper, Bill Wiggins and Scottie James.
