Obituary

On April 18, 1928, a beautiful baby girl named Hattie Mae Banks was born to her parents, Walter, and Tillie Banks in Benchley, Texas. She was the second of ten siblings. Hattie accepted Christ at a very young age and was baptized at Mt. Tiver Baptist Church in Benchly, Tx under the leadership of Rev. Westbrooks. After moving to Houston, Texas Hattie joined New Hope Baptist church, in 1954 under the leadership of Rev. LT Jackson. She was an active member of her church for well over seventy-five years.

Hattie received her education at Dawson-Lockett School and other public schools in Benchley, TX alongside her nine siblings.

For over forty years she was married to Sanford McGowan. This union created their blended family which included eight children. Mary Bailey-Joubert, John Bailey, Elvis Bailey (preceded in death), Walter Bailey, Willie Bailey; and her children through marriage, Sandra JeanDavis (preceded in death), Angela Brooks, and Diana Dill.

She was preceded in death by her parents Walter, and Tillie Banks. Siblings Tommy Banks, Robert Banks (Main), Vera Mae Sloan, Walter Banks (Honey Boy), Leo Daniel Banks (LD), Thelma Brooks, and Zenobla Smith. Children, Elvis Bailey, and Sandra Jean Davis.

On Saturday, February 17, 2024, Hattie transitioned to her heavenly home and leaves to cherish her memory: her faithful and devoted husband Sanford McGowan. Six of her eight children - John Bailey (JoAnn), Walter Bailey (Jackie, preceded in death), (Lillian Bailey), Willie Bailey (Faye), Mary Bailey-Joubert; Angela Brooks (Victor), and Diana Dill (Chris). Two of her nine siblings – Lucille Beal (Curtis) and Wiley Banks. Three of her five Sister-in-laws – Betty Jo O'bryant, Linda Dickey, Francis McGowan (Mable). Two of her four Brother-in-laws – Kenneth Jackson, and Frank York (Bully), and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. She was loved by so many.
