Obituary

In 1920 several important events took place: The League of Nations was created, the 19th Amendment was passed in America giving women the right to vote, and a flight from London to South Africa took 45 days.

The most important event occurred in Huntsville, Texas in 1920 when a male child, named Herbert Denkins was born to John James and Luiler Clay Denkins . When Herbert was two years old, his mother passed away and left him, a younger brother and older children to be raised by their father.

His father, Mr. John James Denkins, was a well-respected member of the community. He raised his children on their Huntsville farm supporting his family as a farmer. Bro. Herbert Denkins came to Houston after leaving the US Army. He served in World War II and received an Honorable Discharge.

Bro. Denkins was employed by Southern Pacific Railroad, which is now Union Pacific Railroad and retired 47 years later in 1985. In addition, he further supported his family as a janitor in the M and M building – later the University of Houston Downtown College – for 25 years.

He joined St John Missionary Baptist Church where he met and married Sis. Eunice Clara Thomas. To this union, four children were born. Bro. Denkins was an active member of the church. He served in Sunday School, Men's Chorus and on the Usher Board. His community activities included an active member as a Mason in the U.M.W. Scottish Rite Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Texas, Inc. Pleasant Rose Lodge #1051102., In addition, he was very involved with the Denkins Family Reunion activities. Bro. Denkins is preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Thomas Denkins, grandchildren Monte' Alliniece Denkins and Carla Annette Cooks, his brothers John, Levine, Allen Felix, Homer, Wince, Jesse, and Horace; sisters, Alice, Fannie, Kallie, Letha, Katy, Julia, Mary, Ellie, Faith, Ruby, Loretta, Beatrice, Iree, and Hassie

On Thursday November 16, 2023, Bro. Denkins transitioned into eternal rest. He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted children, Eunice Denkins Cooks (Eddie Cooks), Allen Wayne Denkins, Shelia Denkins Edwards, Yvonne Marie Denkins (Fred Cunningham), grandchildren Allen Michon Denkins, Lauren Rachelle Denkins, Aaron Bernard Cooks, Arthur Lee Edwards II, Adrian Denkins Cunningham, Michelle Denkins Cunningham Harrell (Glenn Scott Harrell), and great grandchildren Justice Akil Taffe, Allenson Blair Denkins, Wynton Allender Denkins, Alexander Wain Denkins, Phoenix Capri Taffe,
