Herbert Lee
Thomas
Dec 11, 1946 — Mar 20, 2025
With hearts full of love and gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate the homegoing of Herbert Lee Thomas, Sr., who was called to eternal rest on March 20, 2025, at the age of 78. While we mourn his passing, we rejoice in the promise of God that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
Herbert was born on December 11, 1946, in Opelousas, Louisiana to the late Henry Thomas Sr. and Asalena Poullard. From a young age, he was instilled with strong values of faith, hard work, and family, which he carried throughout his life. Herbert accepted Jesus as his personal Savior at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Opelousas, Louisiana.
Herbert graduated from J.S. Clark High School in 1965 before answering the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1969; followed by service in the Air Force Reserves until 1971.
In 1969, Herbert relocated to Houston, Texas, where he began a new chapter of his life. He dedicated over 30 years of service to General Motors, from 1972 until retiring in 2004. In 1986, his journey took him to Reno, Nevada, where he spent several years before returning to Houston upon retirement, where he remained until the Lord called him home.
On June 9, 1978, Herbert married the love of his life, Myra Land, and together they built a life filled with love, faith, and family. To this blessed union, one son was born, but Herbert's love extended beyond measure, embracing all of his children with a father's heart.
A man of many passions, Herbert was an avid sports fan who could always be found cheering for his beloved Los Angeles Lakers and his hometown Houston Oilers. He enjoyed playing softball and was a proud member of a bowling league, where he spent countless hours enjoying fellowship and friendly competition.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Lincoln Thomas and Henry Thomas Jr. ("Lee Boy"); four sisters Lily Thibodeaux, Mae Doris Brooks, Lena Flanagan, and Carolyn Thomas, and his grandson Dontrell Kelly.
In God's care, he leaves behind his devoted wife Myra Thomas. Two sons Paul Thomas (Michelle) and Herbert Lee Thomas Jr. (Ashley). Three daughters Franceida Russaw (Milton), Deniza Frederick, and Tinnia Spears. 12 grandchildren My'Yeshia (Kevin), Corey, Ken, D'Myrian, Tairon (Jai), D'Neshia, Mishicka, Antonia (Nicholas), Milton III, MyQuandria, Mileke and Tia. 27 great-grandchildren. Two god-daughters Sandra James (Steve) and Nichelle Milburn, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
