Herman Edward
Reece
Sep 11, 1943 — Jan 6, 2024
Herman Edward Reece was born on September 11, 1943, in Liberty County in Cleveland, Texas, to the late Herman and Alcenia Johnson Reece. Herman was the first of eleven children raised by his grandparents, Ed and Annie Reece. He was baptized at the Hill Zion Baptist Church by Reverend R.L. Archield. He attended elementary school in Cleveland, Texas.
Herman moved to Houston when his grandfather died. He attended Houston ISD schools and graduated from the old Booker T. Washington H.S. in 1961. Auto mechanic classes heavily influenced Herman in high school. He became passionate about cars inside and out. With his brilliant mind, his vocational path reflected the same.
He spent summers and holidays, every chance he got, to visit his parents. There, he was introduced to many facets of country living. He was spoiled by his uncles and aunts on both sides. From one of the uncles, "Luby," came his nickname "Tuby."
After high school, he married Vera DeBose (deceased), and this union produced five sons. The next chapter of his book introduced Sandra Brooks Reece, his wife of fifty-two years. From this union came one daughter, Heather Reece Brooks Edwards (deceased), two granddaughters, Kennedy Brooks Tennard and Kamdyn Brooks Edwards, and two bonus daughters: Zowanda Shinholster and her children Kristopher and Korey Shinholster, and Tonya Brooks Wyche-Turbe and her son Sandan Wyche.
Herman was sent to auto mechanics school by his employer, Bland Willis Cadillac, and became a master mechanic for over five decades; he either drove, repaired, or rebuilt cars. He worked for thirteen years at Bland Willis Cadillac. Herman worked for Rapid Transit Bus Service, Kerrville Bus Company, Coach USA, and Wolf and Morgan Architecture. He was transportation and logistics for the United States Postal Service.
Herman also worked as a private chauffeur for Houston's elite — as the charter bus driver from the Forest Club to Round Top, Texas. Reece was Former President Clinton's personal coach driver when he was campaigning for his first presidential term.
"Reece," as his long-term friends affectionately called him, will be remembered as a very dutiful son, a diehard friend, a great nephew, and a dependable neighbor. As his health declined, fewer porch meetings were held at 2915 Barbee St.
Reece passed away on January 6, 2024, following a scripture reading and final embrace by his wife, Sandra. He is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Alcenia Johnson Reece; daughter Heather Edwards; and special nephew Romeo Reece.
He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-two years, Sandra Brooks Reece; sons Michael, Christopher (Tonya), Troy, Jason (Chanae), and Sean (Melissa) Reece; sisters Diane Franklin of San Bruno, California, Shirley Waltersdorf (Frank), Linda Whitaker (James), Marilyn Baker, Melba Cloud, Virginia Oliver (Anthony), Tilda Keels, and Lucretia Lewis (Lloyd); brothers Cleotis Reece (Diane) and Calvin Reece; daughter-in-law Zowanda Kim Shinholster (Leonard), her children Kristopher, Courtney, and Korey Shinholster, and her grandchildren Khyler, Callie Rose, Serenity, and Gizel; daughter-in-law Tonya Brooks Wyche-Turbe (Sheku) and son Sandan; forty-nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; loving aunt Edna Russell; and special friends Al Hurd, Ron Scales, Curtis Lampey, JC Hartman, Lee Neil, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives.
