Jenean Sampson
Spikes
Oct 21, 1945 — Nov 19, 2025
Born the fourth child to Pastor Harry Burney Sampson, Sr. and Annie Belle Lenzia Sampson, Jenean entered the world wrapped in the warmth of a faith-filled family. At a very young age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a devoted member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where her father faithfully served as pastor. Guided by his leadership and inspired by her love for The Lord, Jenean joyfully embraced her God-given musical gifts and offered them back to Him with passion and purpose.
Jenean's early education began at Matthew Winfred Dogan Elementary School, continued at George Washington Carver Elementary and George Washington Carver Junior Senior High School, and culminated in her graduation from Kashmere Gardens Junior Senior High School in 1963. In the same year, history called her forward: Jenean became one of the first Black students admitted to the University of Houston following the Civil Rights Act of 1963. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, marking not only a personal triumph but a milestone of courage and determination.
While at the University of Houston, Jenean distinguished herself as a gifted vocalist, performing with the University of Houston Concert Choir, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, and the Houston Chorale, under the renowned Sir John Barbirolli. Her voice—rich, moving, and unmistakably anointed—left an imprint everywhere it was heard.
Jenean's professional life reflected her heart for service and her commitment to youth. She began her career in the North Forest Independent School District, first as a Clerk at Forest Brook High School, then as the school's Music Instructor and Choir Director. She later brought her talents to Hilliard Elementary School, where she continued shaping young minds and nurturing future musicians with patience, creativity, and love.
Her ministry at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church began in her teenage years, when she stepped into the roles of Musician and Choir Director. Under the pastoral ministry of her brother, Pastor Franklin D. Sampson, Sr., she led the Music Ministry for many years, offering her voice and guidance with steadfast devotion. She also served as a Sunday School Teacher to the Young Adult Women's Class, pouring wisdom, encouragement, and scriptural truth into every lesson. Jenean later continued her music ministry at Smyrna Seventh-day Adventist Church and Hopewell Temple Baptist Church, under the pastoral ministry of her brother, the late Pastor Asa Wesley Sampson, Sr. and later, her nephew, Pastor Asa Wesley Sampson, Jr. until her health would no longer allow her to serve. Steadfast and firmly committed, she demonstrated the spirit of excellence, passion, and love in all she did.
There is no question that Jenean possessed a rare and remarkable voice—one that moved hearts, ushered in worship, and glorified God in every note. Her gift was requested often and widely, and she never hesitated to lift her voice in service to the Lord. Beyond her musical ministry, Jenean served her community as a Precinct Judge in districts across both north and south Houston, faithfully contributing to civic life with integrity and dedication. In her early adult years, she became and has remained an active member of The Order of the Eastern Star, as well as The Heroines of Jericho, Prince Hall Affiliated.
Jenean was joined in marriage to John Spikes and later chose to be a mother to her daughter, Jzavia Marie Spikes, who she deeply loved and treasured throughout her life.
Jenean now rests in God's eternal peace, reunited with her beloved parents, Pastor Harry Burney Sampson, Sr. and Annie Belle Lenzia Sampson; her brothers, Frank William Sampson (who passed in infancy), Pastor Harry Burney Sampson, Jr., and Pastor Asa Wesley Sampson, Sr.; and her nephew, Mark Lindsey Sampson.
She leaves to cherish her powerful legacy, her daughter, Jzavia Marie Spikes; her brothers Pastor Franklin D. Sampson, Sr. (Marie) and Pastor Reuben Immanuel Sampson, Sr. (LaVerne); her cherished nieces and nephews; cousins; and countless friends and loved ones whose lives were brightened by her voice, her laughter, and her unwavering faith.
Though Jenean's earthly melody has concluded, may her impact continue to echo in every heart she touched and serve as a guiding light to those who remain for generations to come.
