Jesse Gene
Jones
Nov 10, 1953 — May 20, 2025
Pastor Emeritus Jesse Gene Jones, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, pastor, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, in Houston, Texas, at 71.
Born on November 10, 1953, Jesse was the cherished son of the late Maggie Jones and Eugene Jones. He was raised in a strong and faithful household, deeply influenced by the love and guidance of his late grandparents: Theodore and Vivian Williams, Jesse James Bates, LaVerta Hill, and Annie Mae and Carl Guinn.
At 13, Jesse joined Houston's Southeast Inspirational Choir under the leadership of Shirley Joiner, Carl Preacher, and Brenda Waters. For over 50 years, his blessed voice graced the tenor section and led beloved songs such as "Til He Comes" and "By Faith." Through national and international tours, Jesse shared the love of Jesus through gospel music. He remained a dedicated member and leader in the choir, a vital part of Preparing Holy Disciples, and an "Uncle Jesse" to many. He joyfully shared the stage with gospel greats, including Kim Burrell, Yolanda Adams, Daryl Coley, and Fred Hammond.
A proud graduate of Houston ISD, Jesse was a member of the Jesse H. Jones High School Class of 1972. He continued his education at the University of Houston (1972–1975) and later earned a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from the American Institute of Banking. His professional journey included positions at Capital Bank, San Jacinto Savings and Loans, and Frost Bank, where he eventually retired. Responding to a deeper spiritual calling, Jesse earned a degree in Theology from Union Bible College.
On August 21, 1976, Jesse married the love of his life, Elaine Joice Haywood. For nearly 49 years, Elaine was his soul mate, helpmate, caretaker, and closest friend. Their marriage was a powerful example of enduring love, built on mutual respect, unwavering support, and shared faith. Elaine stood by his side as his greatest earthly blessing through every season of life and ministry.
Jesse's calling to ministry led him to serve faithfully at Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he was assistant youth choir director, youth pastor, and interim pastor (1986–1987). Passionate about youth, he co-founded and organized the church's award-winning drill team. In 1994, he was called to pastor First Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, where he shepherded the congregation for over 30 years. Upon his retirement in 2025, he was honored as Pastor Emeritus. He also served as Vice-President of the BTU Congress for the Northeast District Association.
Pastor Jones will be remembered for his powerful preaching, joyful singing, and deep love of reading. He also had a lifelong passion for Marvel movies, comic books, and science fiction—especially Star Wars and Star Trek—which he delighted to share with his nephews Erik Cartwright and Donald Paige and his grandchildren.
Jesse is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Elaine Jones; his daughters, Jessica Singleton (Leander), Myra Jones, and Geniece Robinson; and 14 beloved grandchildren. He also leaves behind his siblings: Vivian Cartwright, Sidney Earl Jones, Michael Jones (Sharon), Eugene Jones Jr. (Dorothy), Reva Land (Terry), and Lamonica Jones; his aunts: Clara Jones, Callie B. Smith, and Valerie Jones; his godchildren and God-given daughter, LaKisha Williams; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, his church family, and lifelong friends.
His life and legacy will be celebrated on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, 7926 Shotwell, Houston, Texas 77016. A viewing will occur at 10:00 AM, followed by funeral services at 11:00 AM.
Pastor Jones's family invites all who knew and loved him to attend and share in this time of remembrance and thanksgiving. Please send all flowers to Troy B. Smith Professional Services, 9013 Scott St., Houston. Texas 77051. All monetary donations may be sent via Cash App to $EJGrammy.
