John E. Thomas Jr. was born on July 7, 1949, in Houston, Texas, to John E. Thomas Sr. and Mary Alice Newsome Thomas. He was proudly known as the first grandchild of the Newsome family, a distinction he cherished throughout his life. He peacefully entered eternal rest on July 14, 2026, at the age of 77.

John was preceded in death by his father and mother, John E. Thomas Sr. and Mary Alice Newsome Thomas, three sisters, and other beloved family members.

John attended Jack Yates High School, where his artistic talent quickly became evident. As an outstanding art student, he earned a scholarship through the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo with the intent of attending Texas Southern University. His creativity and passion for art remained a defining part of his life. John also had a love for cooking and found great joy in preparing meals for his family and friends. A man of deep faith, John accepted Christ at an early age and was a devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He later united with Blueridge Methodist Church, where he faithfully served until the Lord called him home. Throughout the years, he served as an usher, Boy Scout leader, Tuesday morning bible study participant, trustee, a member of the Methodist Men, and dedicating his time and talents to God's work and his community.

John was a devoted husband who leaves to cherish his memory, a loving wife, Shelia Thomas, whose faithful and dutiful love and support were a constant source of strength throughout their years together.

He also leaves to cherish his memory, his loving children:

• Three daughters: April Thomas, Melita Perry, and Jonetta Perry

He is also survived by six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; his beloved sister, Rosemary Thomas; brother-in-law, Russell Berzat; nieces Dana Berzat and Lakeysha Blayne; great-nephew Drake Blayne; godchildren Jayvion Anderson and Jaidyn Hurts; his beloved aunt, Anna Lois Smith; a host of loving cousins, extended family, and dear friends; and his cherished dog, Scottie.

John will be remembered for his gentle spirit, artistic gifts, unwavering faith, and servant's heart. His kindness, generosity, and love for his family, church, and community touched countless lives. His legacy of faith, service, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
