John Louis
Edwards Sr
Jan 28, 1938 — May 2, 2025
John L. Edwards, affectionately known as "John L," a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He departed this life peacefully on May 2, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, love, and unwavering commitment to family and community.
John was born on January 28, 1938, in Houston, Texas, to Reverend Lawrence and Ethel Edwards. He was the second of seven children born to this loving union. From an early age, John showed a deep sense of responsibility and compassion, dedicating his life to caring for his parents and siblings.
He attended Jack Yates High School (3rd Ward) but selflessly left in the 11th grade to support his family due to his father's chronic illness. He worked alongside his mother at Prince's Hamburgers and held other jobs to help provide for the family. On his 18th birthday, John enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country with honor for two years before continuing his service in the U.S. Air Force Reserve for an additional 20 years.
Committed to lifelong learning, John pursued studies in Psychology and Automotive at Houston Community College. He built a successful career as a machinist at Cameron Iron Works (now Wyman-Gordon), where he worked diligently for 38 years. In addition, he co-owned an Exxon service station with his father and provided janitorial services at industrial plants to further support his family.
John's life was filled with deep and meaningful relationships. His first child, Arnell (Audrey Hill), followed by Ricky, (Helen Belfort). In 1967, he met and married Ruby Ashton, and together they welcomed three children: Kevin, Demetrias, and John Jr., along with bonus children Diane, Arnold, and Denise. Though the marriage ended in divorce, the love he had for his children never waned. In 1997, he found companionship once more with Mandy Locket, who remained his beloved wife until her passing.
A man of faith, John grew up in a Christian home with minister parents and later joined New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. His belief in service and community was evident in the way he mentored neighborhood youth, teaching them practical life skills like barbecuing and car maintenance, and offering guidance with a steady and kind hand.
As a father, John exemplified responsibility, teaching his children how to care for themselves and for each other. As a brother, he was extraordinary—steadfast, loyal, and kind. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
John was a beacon of love, compassion, and joy, lighting up every room with his radiant spirit and trademark smile.
He is preceded in death by his parents Reverend Lawrence and Ethel Edwards, his beloved wife Mandy Edwards, his granddaughter Lakeisha "Cricket" McNeil, and brothers Lawrence Edwards Jr. and Donald Edwards.
He is survived by his children: Arnell (Bert), Kevin (LaShunda), Demetrias, John Jr., Diane, and Denise; his siblings: Eileen Edwards, Diane Edwards, Alvin Edwards, and Ralph Edwards; and a large and loving family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
John L. Edwards' legacy of love, resilience, and service lives on through the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered
