John
Ellis
Feb 7, 1931 — Feb 5, 2025
It is with deep love and reverence that we celebrate the life of John Ellis, a cherished gift from God. Born on February 7, 1931, to Ferdinand and Edna Ellis in Houston, Texas, John was one of ten children born to this union.
John's educational journey began at Douglas Elementary School and continued at Jack Yates High School. After graduating, he proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, a period of his life that filled him with great pride. Stationed in Hawaii for two years, John's sense of duty and patriotism remained unwavering. Following his military service, he pursued higher education at Texas Southern University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Vocational Education. John's thirst for knowledge didn't stop there, as he later attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, Illinois, where he earned a Master's Degree. He also completed post-graduate studies at Prairie View A&M University, where he earned certification in Supervision and Administration.
John's professional career began humbly as a Coach Cleaner for the Houston Belt & Terminal Railroad and later as Manager of the Gulf Courteous Service Station. However, it was in education where John truly made his mark. He began his teaching career at George Washington Carver High School in Acres Homes, where he taught Auto Mechanics for three years. He then transferred to Evan E. Worthing High School, where he spent 17 years teaching Auto Mechanics, all within the Houston Independent School District. During the summers, John also worked as a Student Trainer for Shell Oil Company and as a Driver's Education instructor at Texas Southern University. Eventually, he earned a promotion to Administrator of the Vocational Education Program for the Handicapped, where his dedication and expertise led to significant improvements for many students. After 30 years of devoted service, John retired from the Houston Independent School District in 1990.
An entrepreneurial spirit, John was the proud owner of several businesses, including Oakton Place and Ellis Business Enterprise, Inc. His work ethic and dedication were matched by his passion for service.
A deeply devout man, John was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. He was baptized at the Third Ward Church of Christ and later became an integral member of the South Union Church of Christ, where services had started in a small white house on Tierwester Street. From a young age, John was captivated by the teachings of the Bible and committed himself to diligent study, which led him to become an outstanding leader and teacher. Over the years, he served as a Deacon, Assistant Minister, and eventually, an Elder. He provided spiritual guidance and leadership to his church community for many years.
He was a radio minister for many years at KCOH Radio Station, where he touched the lives of many with his teachings and reflections on faith. Sundays and Wednesdays were especially dear to him as he enjoyed being a Bible school teacher, sharing wisdom and love with the congregation. John held home Bible classes and baptized many souls, sometimes even at midnight, reflecting his deep commitment to his faith and the salvation of others.
As an Elder, John served with his fellow elders, overseeing the National Crusade for Christ for many years. His wisdom and guidance were sought after as he performed many weddings for church members, counseled couples, and attended marriage events, always with the goal of strengthening relationships. He also served as a speaker at many workshops and conferences. His life was driven by a singular vision: "I am always interested in doing what is best for the church."
In the fall of 1949, John met Mandura Williams, who was a new student on the school bus. At the time, John was in the 12th grade, and Mandura was in the 8th grade. Though they were merely acquaintances, John made a point to save her a seat on the bus every day. When John graduated mid-term, Manduracontinued her studies and graduated from Jack Yates High School in 1954. Their paths crossed again in 1954 at Texas Southern University, where John, now a U.S. Marine Veteran, was enrolled in Industrial Education, and Mandura at 17, enrolled in the School of Business. Their romance blossomed, encouraged by Mandura's best friend, Dorothy Spencer (McIlveen), who noticed how John always smiled at her and called it to her attention. On June 10, 1956, they were married at the Church of Christ in Fifth Ward, and together, they pursued their educational goals, graduating from college.
John and Mandura were blessed with two wonderful children: Sonia Gail Ellis Taylor (Mike) and Selvyn John Ellis (Natarsha). They also took great joy in their grandchildren: Eryka, Courtney, Sydney, Angel, Joseph, Shane, Shannon, Selvyn Jr., Ava, and Nova—two sets of twins among them. He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters and 5 brothers. John is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, 1 brother (Nathaniel), son-in-law, daughter-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, god-daughters and friends.
John and Mandura's love and devotion to each other and to Christ have stood the test of time. They have lived a life together founded on faith, love, and mutual respect. Their marriage has lasted 68 years, 7 months, and 26 days, a testament to their enduring commitment and love for one another.
John Ellis leaves behind a lasting legacy of service, education, and faith. He will forever be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his Lord.
