John A.
Washington
Feb 22, 1929 — Feb 27, 2024
John Albert Washington passed away on February 27, 2024. He was born on August 22, 1929, in Bunkie, LA to Henry and Ethel Jones Washington. After his mother passed away, his father Henry married Alberta Scott. The Washington Family relocated to LaPorte, Tx. where John was raised as the oldest of six siblings. Due to segregation, John traveled 30 minutes by bus to attend George Washington Carver Elementary school in Baytown, TX. Despite having only a 6th grade education, John was an intelligent, well-traveled, successful self-made man with a charismatic personality. His enthusiastic energy made him the center of attention in every venue.
John voluntarily enlisted in the United States Armed Forces Military at the age of 17 stating, "they were coming for me anyway". He proudly served from 1950-1953 during the Korean War. After his tour of duty, John pursued a career in the Hospitality Industry. He worked for the Omni Hotel as a dedicated banquet server until his retirement in 1993. After retirement, John continued to work part-time for the Houston Unified School District. John was a caring crossing guard for the school district until he finally retired in 2016. John loved to be in the presence of people, if he wasn't traveling you could find him in a chair talking to his family on the phone, eating a bag of dried mangos. John enjoyed spending quality time with family, traveling across the country and listening to the Blues. When asked how he was doing, John always replied "I am alright for an old man!" He made sure everyone knew that "he didn't take any wooden nickels!"
John is survived by his children James, Yvonne, Anthony Sr. (Lori), Elanor, Henry, and Lisa, grandchildren: Richard, Mayisha, Christopher, Billy, Sinia, Terry (Maria), Michael (Kari), NaKeisha, Kevin, Corey, April, Deserie Chrystal, Claudette, Albert, Monica, Mason, Antoinette (LaVelle), Thomas, Toni, Makiba and 38 Great grandchildren,
by his brother Gene (Claudith) Washington of Minnesota and sisters, Essie (Charles Sr.) Herbert and Ephenetta (Travis) Parker of Texas and by a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Ethel Jones Washington, Henry and Alberta Scott Washington, sisters, Willie Mae Frederick and Mary Carter, sons, Virgil and Titus Washington, and granddaughter Asia Demps.
The Family of John A. Washington wants to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers. We appreciate the floral arrangements, memorial donations, and additional help. Your love and kindness have brought us great comfort and will always be remembered.
