Obituary

Kelly Maureen Colbert was born on October 11, 1972 in Houston, TX, the first born to Arlton and Dinah Colbert. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Holman Street Baptist Church.

While at Holman Street Kelly was an engaged participant in Sunday School, Youth Discipleship Ministries (Y.D.M.), the youth choir, drill team and bible drill competitions. She was especially proud of being a member of, "The Inspirations"; a singing group comprised of other teens from Holman Street that sang at various events throughout the city.

Kelly was a product of the Fort Bend ISD school system attending Briargate Elementary, Missouri City Middle School and  graduating in the top tier of her class from Willowridge High School. She excelled in school as a member of several honor societies as well as the Academic Decathlon graduating with honors in the Class of 1990.

Kelly attended Baylor University where she became a member of the illustrious Rho Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. While at Baylor, she made life long friends while singing with the Voices of Praise Gospel Choir, Dejuan Adamson and the Anointed Voices of Worship and attending Living Word Church of God in Christ.

Kelly eventually settled back in Houston where she became a member of Christ Temple The People's Church of God in Christ. She was a member of the praise team and held the title of choir president. Kelly loved to sing and had the pleasure of singing with many local and city-wide choirs as well as singing background for several gospel artist.

Kelly has always loved children and worked tirelessly with the children at church assisting with teaching Sunday school, vacation bible school and the kids sunshine band. Her love of working with kids prompted her to make a career change and attend Texas Southern University receiving a B.S. in Education. She soon began working as a kindergarten teacher at Cloverleaf Elementary in Galena Park ISD where she was awarded the Rookie Teacher of the year Award for the district.

Some of her favorite, most loved pleasures and pastimes were enjoying good food with family and friends, catching a movie on Tuesday's and watching murder mysteries on PBS. She was a great friend who took her friendships very seriously and invested the time and love that it took to nurture those relationships. When Kelly loved, she loved hard.

Although Kelly has accomplished much in her lifetime, her greatest accomplishment has always been being a mother to her daughter Kayla. She loved her so much and the bond that they shared was truly unbreakable. She was also very proud of her grandchildren and thought the world of her talented nieces and nephews.

Kelly went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 19, 2024. She was preceded in eternal rest by her father Arlton James Colbert. She leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Dr. Dinah Colbert, one sister Lisa Frier (Verlon); one daughter; Dr. Kayla Moore (Steven); three grand children; Steven, Matthew, Joshua and "baby girl Moore" due February 2024; a nephew Aiden Frier; two nieces Avery and Alivia Frier and a host of cousins and friends.

Though her absence leaves a void that can never be filled, we are comforted by the countless memories of her love, laughter, and wisdom. Kelly's memory will forever live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
