Obituary

Laverne Currie was born January 22, 1938, in Humboldt, Gibson County, Tennessee to Eddie Louis Currie, Sr. and Katherine Williams-Currie. Laverne accepted Christ at a very young age in Humboldt, Tennessee.

Laverne was educated at the old East Technical Senior High School in Cleveland, Ohio. On December 23, 1955, she married Homer F. Chatman, Sr. and to that union, two sons were born: Dwayne Chatman and Homer F. Chatman, Jr. She was also blessed with a loving stepdaughter, P. Theresa Diggs.

Laverne was employed at Sanders Cleaners for several years in Cleveland, Ohio, and later began working at Mr. Coffee in Cleveland in 1972 in as an assembly-line supervisor until she retired.

Her special mentor was the late senior pastor Bishop Warren E. Miller of Williams Temple Church of God In Christ (COGIC) in Cleveland, Ohio, where she became "Saved, Sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost." Laverne worked very closely under the leadership of Bishop Miller as a cook in the church kitchen and she also served as a doorkeeper on the Williams Temple usher board.

Laverne loved to travel throughout the United States of America, as well as international travel, until she became ill.

Laverne was proceeded in death by her parents, Eddie L. Currie, Sr., and Katherine Currie; Son, Dwayne Chatman; Ex-Husband Homer F. Chatman, Sr.; three sisters - Juanita Currie, Dorothy M. Currie-Warren, Flora D. Currie-Sullivan, and, two brothers - Wallace Currie and Nathan L. Currie.

After caring for herself became more difficult, Laverne relocated to Rosharon, Texas, in June 2022 to reside with her son Homer and daughter-in-law Bobbi Jean. Laverne entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 21, 2024, in Pearland, Texas.

Laverne leaves to cherish her memories her son: Homer F. Chatman, Jr. (Bobbi Jean) Rosharon, Texas, and stepdaughter P. Theresa Diggs, Cleveland, Ohio. Cherished grandchildren: Lashona D. Rodgers, Suffolk, Virginia; Rashida D.M. Chatman, Garfield Heights, Ohio, and; Brandon R. Chatman, Rosharon, Texas. Four adoring great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Loving siblings K. Ann Currie (Bradley A. Van Auken), Kirtland, Ohio; Willie V. Currie, Thomas L. Currie, Sr., and Burhaan Abu-Bakr all of Cleveland, Ohio. Laverne will also be remembered fondly by her special friends Lucille and Minnie F. Miller-Young, as well as a host of relatives and friends.
