Lawrence
Harvey
Jan 16, 1954 — Dec 19, 2023
Lawrence Harvey entered the world on January 16, 1954, in Navasota, Texas (Allen Farm). Born to the proud parents Robert Harvey and Clara Mae Washington Harvey, Lawrence was the fourth child in a union that spanned many fulfilling years. Lawrence's journey began in the scenic landscapes of Navasota before transitioning to the vibrant city of Houston in 1956, settling in the historic 4th Ward.
Educational pursuits led Lawrence through the corridors of Houston's public schools, where he attended and graduated from Gregory Elementary, Abraham Lincoln Jr. High, and Abraham Lincoln High School. Lawrence's athletic prowess emerged as a defining characteristic during those early years. Football, track, baseball, and basketball became not just sports but arenas where Lawrence excelled and showcased his innate talent. Lawrence's achievements reached a pinnacle when he earned a full athletic scholarship to play football at Prairie View A&M University. This scholarship wasn't just a recognition of his skill on the field but a testament to the dedication, discipline, and hard work that defined Lawrence's approach to sports and life.
In the early 1970s, the tapestry of Lawrence's life began to weave a new thread when he crossed paths with Wanda at the Michael E. DeBakey Veteran Affairs Medical Center. Their connection deepened, blossoming into a beautiful romance. On July 21, 1984, Lawrence and Wanda united in marriage. Their union formed the foundation of their family life. Their children, Minister LaChelle Renee Pierre and Christopher Lawrence Harvey, grew up in the warmth of their parents' love and steadfast guidance. As a parent, Lawrence embodied a no-nonsense approach, maintaining a strict demeanor to ensure that his children navigated life precisely—often insisting on "his way." In embracing this parental influence, LaChelle and Christopher flourished during their formative years and continued to thrive into adulthood, shaped by the enduring impact of their dedicated parents.
Lawrence's professional journey mirrored his tenacity. He dedicated over two decades to Southern Pacific Railroad, leveraging his work ethic and skill. His trajectory led him to professional truck driving, a career that saw him navigating the logistics of the Houston Ship Channel, U.S. Postal Service, and UPS. In 2003, Lawrence started working for Halliburton. This position took him overseas to Kuwait, where he braved challenging and harsh environments and was one of more than 24,000 Halliburton employees risking their lives every day working in the Kuwait-Iraq region, supporting our troops by driving trucks that carried tractors, food, and weapons. Lawrence returned to the U.S. in 2004 after Christopher graduated from high school and worked with Halliburton locally for several more years.
Following a wealth of experience in truck driving, Lawrence embraced entrepreneurship, venturing into ownership as an operator of an 18-wheeler truck through a business partnership. His ventures took him nationwide, delivering diverse loads for various businesses. This entrepreneurial chapter in Lawrence's life continued until his well-deserved retirement.
Above all, Lawrence was a family man, caring deeply for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. His legacy extends beyond professional achievements, embodying a profound commitment to love, wisdom, and unwavering familial bonds. Known by endearing nicknames, Lawrence's multifaceted personality left a lasting impression. "MacGuyver" reflected his ability to fix anything, "The General" symbolized his strict standards, and "Pluck" transformed from a childhood moniker to the affectionate "Uncle Pluck" among family members. Lawrence was a member of New Faith Church for 19 years before officially joining the Fountain of Praise in 2015.
