Leveria
Johnson
Sep 12, 1943 — Jan 20, 2024
Mrs. LeVeria Doggett Johnson was born on September 12, 1943, in Huntsville, TX to the late Ranger and Angeline Cooper-Doggett. A gifted honor student with many interests, she attended public school in Huntsville TX (Walker County). LeVeria became a member of the youth choir at the Thessalonia Missionary Baptist Church in the Arizona community of Huntsville where she accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age. Additional interests involved basketball and band on through her graduation from Sam Houston High School of Huntsville in 1961.
After spending a year attending Texas Southern University, LeVeria transferred to Prairie View University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1964, all while supporting herself. LeVeria's early life shaped her dedication to fairness and civil rights shown in her participation in the famous Selma, AL march of 1965 and as an early participant of the Huntsville Action for Youth (HA-YOU; pronounced "Hey You") civil rights organization organized to pursue racial integration in Huntsville in the mid-1960s. It was also during that time, LeVeria began a 35-year career in elementary education starting at Crosby (TX) Independent School District and Houston (TX) Independent School District, earning a Master of Science in Elementary Education from Prairie View A&M University in 1972, and retiring in 2000. It was also during her adult life that she found a church home at the Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, TX where she enjoyed participating in the choir.
LeVeria is survived by her husband of 56 years, James Johnson; two sons, Dexter (Kellie) Johnson of McKinney, TX and Dwayne Johnson of Houston, TX; four grandsons, Avery Johnson and Josiah Johnson, both of Houston, TX and Kendall Parker and Harrison Johnson, both of McKinney, TX; two granddaughters, Hannah Johnson and Gabrielle Johnson, both of Houston TX; two sisters, Elmarie Gilbert and Delois Tarver, both of Houston, TX and a host of other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Annie Mae Kizzee, and a brother, David Doggett.
