Lillie Mae
Young
Dec 27, 1927 — Aug 7, 2024
Lillie Mae Young, a devoted follower of Christ from an early age, dedicated her life to faith, social justice, and her loved ones. Born as the youngest of five children to McKinley and Mary Jane Scurlock James on December 27, 1927, in Crockett, Texas. Lillie Mae attended public schools and graduated from Kennard High School in Kennard, Texas. She later graduated from Espanola Beauty School in Houston, Texas, becoming a licensed cosmetology instructor and worked as a beautician. Lillie Mae's Coiffures beautified the ladies of the Sunnyside Community for many years. She also took classes in child development at Texas Southern University.
In October 1945, Lillie Mae married Herman Young, and together they raised seven children. Committed to her community, Lillie Mae served as a precinct judge for the Democratic Party and actively participated in the civil rights movement. At Harris County Social Services-Bowling Green she assisted senior citizens and pre-kindergarten students with obtaining social services. She was also a member of the Eastern Star organization.
Lillie Mae was a passionate and loyal member of Pentecostal Missionary Baptist Church, joining in 1947 under the leadership of Rev. W. H. Burks and remaining faithful under Rev. Acie J. Jefferson, Jr.'s leadership until her health declined. She loved teaching children about Jesus, serving as a Sunday school teacher for many years, and was an enthusiastic choir member and kitchen volunteer. Additionally, she volunteered with the South Texas District Association, various church conventions and helped nurture both young and seasoned ministers in their spiritual growth.
After a long illness, Lillie Mae's earthly life ended on August 7, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. While we mourn the loss of a precious gem and warrior, we find comfort in knowing there is no more pain and sorrow as she enters her eternal life with Jesus Christ.
