Lois Marie Conerly Flaniken was born April 14, 1940, to Bertha Mathews Conerly and Calvin Irece Conerly in Houston, TX. Lois was a long-time resident of 4th Ward Freedmen’s Town until she moved to the 3rd Ward area of the city. She attended Gregory Elementary School and Booker T. Washington where she was an active member of the cheerleading squad.
Lois accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Horeb Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor S. H. Smith, Sr. She was a member of the choir and the mission board. Lois was appointed by Pastor Smith as one of the coordinators for the Mt. Horeb food pantry, where she served for over 8 years. She, along with her co-laborers Deacons O. B. Davis and Malcolm McClemore, her sister Bertha Whitfied, Sis. Edwina Johnson and Rev. Willie Smith were committed to feeding families in the 4th Ward community. Volunteering at the food pantry and the Houston Food Bank was the highlight of her life. Lois later joined the historic Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church in August 2007 to be with her sister, Carol Hearne under the leadership of Pastor D. Z. Cofield.
On August 6, 1957, Lois was joined in holy matrimony to Arthur Lee Flaniken, II. They had 8 children, Regina Marie, Arthur Lee III, Jerome Keith, Alma Elaine, Leland Edward, Tony Irece, Aubrey Renee and Phillip Gerard. Lois encountered various illnesses that impacted her health during her adult life. With the help of her mother, Bertha Conerly and other family members she was able to care for her children despite her illnesses.
On June 9, 2026, Lois transitioned from earth to heaven. She is proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, Arthur Lee Flaniken, II. sons Jerome K. Flaniken and Leland E. Flaniken, daughter Regina M. Flaniken, brothers Thomas and Sherman Conerly, and sisters Bertha Whitfield Thomas and Carol Jean Hearne. She leaves to cherish her memories 3 sons, Arthur Lee Flaniken, III (Montecella Yvette); Tony I. Flaniken, and Phillip G. Flaniken (Samantha); two daughters Alma Copeland (Billy) and Aubrey Flaniken; 21 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, 1 brother Calvin Conerly (LaDeirdre), 1 sister Mary Francis Streeter (Edward), and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
