Major Willie Drake was born on August 20, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas, to the late Lawrence Drake Sr. and Lillian Drake. On March 5, 1944, he was baptized at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Port Arthur, TX, where his lifelong foundation of faith was established.
Willie was educated in the Port Arthur school system and graduated from Lincoln High School. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army in 1962. Following four years of honorable service, he returned home and enrolled at Texas Southern University, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree. Upon graduation, he reenlisted in the United States Army as an officer and embarked on a distinguished military career that allowed him to travel the world. Through hard work, dedication, and exemplary leadership, he rose through the ranks and retired as a United States Army Major in 1986.
Following his military retirement, Major Drake pursued his entrepreneurial dream and became the proud owner of Drake's Automotive Service Center. Through his business, he faithfully served his community and built lasting relationships with customers, friends, and neighbors.
In retirement, Willie devoted himself to the things he loved most. He enjoyed spending time with his family, restoring and working on classic automobiles, writing a book chronicling his life and accomplishments, and sharing treasured stories from his years of military service. His wisdom, humor, and gift for storytelling made him a beloved presence among family and friends.
Later in life, he joined Jones Memorial “The Higher Way” Church in Houston, Texas, under the leadership of Bishop Kenneth Levingston. He faithfully served the church until the Lord called him home on June 9, 2026. His life was guided by three great loves: God and His Church, his family, and the United States Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Drake Sr. and Lillian Drake; sisters, Lillian Mac, Martha Sharp, Shirley Neal, Mary Lazard, and Cora Gray; and brothers, Charlie Drake, Clarence Drake, and Lawrence Drake Jr.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his beloved children: Monica Davis (Frank), Toni Drake, Damon Drake (Jacqueline), Tanya Bailey (Bunard), Kenneth Harris Jr. (Holly), and Melanie Jones (Jeremiah); his devoted siblings, Francis Drake, Freddie Drake, Curley Drake, and Samuel Drake; and a host of cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Major Willie Drake leaves behind a legacy of faith, courage, leadership, service, and love. His life stands as a testament to perseverance, devotion, and excellence. He touched countless lives through his military service, entrepreneurial spirit, church involvement, and unwavering commitment to his family. Though he has departed from this earthly life, his influence and memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love him.
Major Willie Drake, Thank you for your service.
"Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
