Reflections of a Beautiful Life
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10
Surrounded by the love of her family, our cherished Matriarch, Margie Lee Harmon Powell, peacefully transitioned on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at the age of 84. While our hearts feel her absence deeply, we celebrate a life beautifully lived, full of faith, compassion, creativity, and unwavering love.
Margie Powell was born on February 12, 1942, in Mamou, Louisiana, to the late Joseph Alvin Harmon and Armencia (“Alma”) Guidry Harmon. As the eldest of five children, she naturally embraced responsibility, strength, and care for others from a young age. Her family later relocated to Texas, eventually settling in Beaumont, where she attended Hebert High School. She completed her junior and senior years there and graduated in 1960, continuing her educational journey at Lincoln Business College.
In 1962, Margie met the love of her life, Felix Joseph Powell. Their union blossomed into a lifelong partnership grounded in devotion, perseverance, and love. Together, they began their journey in Tyler, Texas, before making Houston their permanent home in 1973, where they built a beautiful life and legacy.
Margie dedicated over three decades of her life to serving others through her work in respiratory therapy—a true reflection of her nurturing spirit. She began her career as a Respiratory Therapy Technician at Memorial Hermann (then Hermann Hospital) and, in 1982, she joined Clear Lake Hospital, now HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake, where she advanced to become a Respiratory Therapist. Through her compassionate care, gentle presence, and dedication, Margie touched countless lives before retiring in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of healing and service.
Her gifts extended far beyond her profession. Margie was incredibly creative, blessed with a remarkable talent for fashion and crafts. Sewing and macramé were among her passions, and she had an extraordinary ability to create beautiful pieces without even needing a pattern. Her hands brought beauty into the world, but even more so, her spirit brought joy and inspiration to everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Music was another one of Margie’s great joys. With her beautiful soprano voice, she uplifted hearts as a member of the Spirit of the Carver Chorale of Baytown Texas. Singing was not just a hobby—it was an expression of her soul and her faith, a gift she gladly shared with others.
A deeply devoted woman of faith, Margie was a longtime member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church. She gave generously of her time and talents, serving faithfully in the church choir and as an original member of the Catholic African American Mass Choir (CAAM), formed following the tragic death of George Thomas “Mickey” Leland in 1989. Margie played an instrumental role in reviving the Hospitality Ministry, offering warmth and welcome to all, and she remained active for many years. In her later years, she continued her service through the Senior Friends group. Even as her journey evolved, her faith remained steadfast—she lovingly led the weekly rosary at her assisted living facility, continuing to uplift and guide others in prayer.
Margie’s life was a radiant reflection of kindness, grace, creativity, and unwavering faith. Her gentle spirit and generous heart left an imprint that will never fade. While she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love, service, and compassion lives on in every life she touched and every heart she inspired.
She leaves behind a legacy of love in her four children: Felix Jerome Powell (Monica); Alexander Harmon Powell (Chalita); Jonathan Eric Powell; and Althea Jane Powell Logans (Narvin), all of Houston, Texas. She is also lovingly remembered by her eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and pride.
Margie is survived by her siblings: Merle Lee Sanders of San Antonio, Texas; Alma Lee McAfee of Houston, Texas; Barbara Faye Harmon of Kountze, Texas; and Vincent DePaul Harmon of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Felix Joseph Powell, and her parents, Joseph and Alma Harmon.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
