Obituary

Mary Lois Cormier served her family well for 92 years and left this worldly life as a matriarch whose legacy will forever be treasured. She was known by a host of friends and family as Fig, for her richness in character, while her grandchildren preferred the simple term of endearment "Grannie". Through all her years, she shared an abundance of love, strength, and devotion that remained the center of life and was never doubted till God called her home.

Mary Lois Breaux was born December 28, 1932, to loving parents, Willie and Inez Pete Breaux, of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. During her childhood, she worked on the family farm while simultaneously pursuing her academic studies. As a young lady, she met and fell in love with her forever friend and partner, Ernest Cormier, whom she entered matrimony in January of 1954, and soon after departed their community for a new opportunity of building a life for themselves in the city of Houston, Texas, where she resided at the time of her death.

From their union came three beautiful blessings, 2 daughters and a bouncing baby boy, to complete their legacy. Ernest and Mary worked hard during their many years together to provide an example of the value of hard work, determination, and dedication. They made their years together loving and caring, creating many memories and exponential growth. God called her husband home in 1994. Mary had not long retired from many years of service at St. Luke's Hospital Medical Center of Houston, TX. Her life continued, she moved on, demonstrating a character of resilience and servitude, often being a resource for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary was rich in the heritage of Creole and American Indian and took pleasure in sharing the language and cuisine, preparing the wonderful dishes that she passed down to enjoy long after she is gone, including boudin, tea cakes, gumbo, and so much more. Mary loved to cook, and we all knew it was an expression of her love; her recipes will forever remain for her family to enjoy. In her spare time, she enjoyed watching sports, game shows, and traveling to Galveston annually with her favorite cousin, Lily Mae, for Mardi Gras, in memory of her native hometown, where they shared lots of laughs, Freddy Jackson music, and early morning coffee as simple pleasures. Mary lived her life as the epitome of class and was well respected by all that she encountered.

She leaves behind to mourn her daughter Brenda Potts (John Edward), a son, Micheal Cormier, seven grandchildren Jennifer, Shemika, John, Latisha, Jessie LaMajor, & Deren; twelve great-great grandchildren Cyril Jr, Keidrick Sr., Jared, Jessie Jr., Jaida, Taylor, Jaydon, Tristen, Keymani, Nyla, John III, Marlee, three great-grandchildren Saia, Sanaa, and Keidrick Jr., and a brother Alvin Breaux of Lafayette. She is preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Cormier; daughter, Joann Cormier Polk; parents, Willie and Inez Breaux; six brothers, Harold Benoit Sr., Melvin Pete, Marvin Breaux, William Breaux, and Villier Breaux; two sisters, Anna Lou Despanie and Eula Mae Trahan; and grandson Jabari Potts.

We will keep close to our hearts her unconditional love, quiet wisdom, steadfast guidance, and unwavering support, as pillars for the family to apply to our own lives as long as we live. We come together today to celebrate her and show reverence; our tears are of gratitude, for we could not have asked for a better example of what an exemplary life should look like.  As we go through these days and weeks learning to live without her dynamic presence in our everyday lives, we will remember the smiles, the laughter, and most importantly, the love she bestowed on us all. Rest in Glory, dearest Mary Lois, life has served you well.
