Obituary

Mayme Ardis-Grier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Kyle, Sr. (Fannie B. Shaw), was born in San Marcos, Texas on January 2, 1936.  She was the second child of a sibling group of 4 girls and 3 boys.  She received her primary, middle and high school education at San Marcos Colored High School, from which she graduated as class valedictorian in 1951.  Following in her mother's footsteps, Mayme attended Samuel Huston College, now Huston-Tillotson University, a historically black college, in Austin, Texas.  While there, she was initiated into Alpha Mu Chapter, and later had the distinct honor of becoming a Charter Member of Beta Kappa Chapter, of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc.

After receiving a Bachelor's Degree in sociology with an education minor in 1955, honors graduate, Mayme, taught in public schools for five years. While teaching, she met and later married Clarence Ardis in 1960.  Their 27 year marriage was blessed with a son, Terrence, and daughter, Carole.  The couple resided in Houston, Texas until Clarence transitioned in 1987.

A volunteer in schools, church and various community organizations, Mayme decided to make a career change.  She earned a Master of Social Work degree at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas.  Her thirty-eight years of social work practice in Houston, Texas encompassed multiple delivery systems, to include, family and children's services, medical and mental health, education, community organization (such as her work with Self Help for African People through Education (S.H.A.P.E.) Community Center and many other groups) and, ultimately, clinical private practice.  Mayme is recognized as one of Houston's "Black Pioneers in Social Work."  She was a founding member of several advocacy organizations, including the National Association of Black Social Workers (Houston Chapter); the Black Child Development Institute (Houston Chapter); Texas Association of School Age Parents; Houston Association of School Age Parents, and Churches Interested in Premature Parentage.  She continued volunteer and community activities throughout her career.

Retiring in 2001, Mayme married Cicero Grier and relocated to his home in Charlotte, North Carolina. She and Cicero were active members of First Baptist Church. While there, she joined the Finance Board, Congregation for Kids, Youth Ministry, and Bereavement Ministry. She also transferred her AKA membership from Houston's Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter to Rho Psi Omega Chapter in Charlotte.  She quickly became involved in chapter activities, participating in tutoring and other program areas.  She always remembered the true spirit of sisterhood felt when she joined Rho Psi Omega.

Following Cicero's transition, Mayme moved to Converse, Texas in 2018. Being a strong believer in Christ, she moved her church membership to True Light Christian Fellowship in San Antonio, Texas.  Mayme was an avid reader and scrabble player.  Her sister, Vada Kyle-Holmes, was one of her toughest scrabble opponents. One of Mayme's favorite pastimes was to share a meal, many of which were catered by her baby brother George Kyle, with her older brother Edwin and other family members. She enjoyed quilting, playing bridge and pinochle, and spending time with family and friends.

Mayme was preceded in death by her husbands Clarence Ardis (27 years) and Cicero Grier (17 years); parents Sidney Kyle, Sr. and Fannie B. Kyle; siblings Sidney Kyle Jr., Mary Kyle Mack and Frankie Juanita Kyle Christian.  Mayme is survived by her children Terrence and Carole Ardis; brothers Edwin Kyle and George Kyle; sister Vada Kyle-Holmes (Stevenson); grandchildren Terre Holmes, Brian Hickman, Kristin Ardis, Sydnie Ardis, Kendall Ardis and Olivia Ardis, and a host of great grandchildren (20), nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. A life well lived, she leaves many other family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
