Obituary

Naomi DeLois Wesley was born March 6,1933, to Daniel and Emeola Burleson Wesley in Houston, Texas.  She excelled in school, graduating as Valedictorian from Booker T. Washington High School in 1951.  In 1957, she earned her bachelor's degree from Hampton University, located in Hampton Virginia. She later received a master's degree from Texas Southern University and completed postgraduate studies at Prairie View A&M University and at the University of Houston Clear Lake.  She worked in Houston Independent School District as a teacher and guidance counselor for 37 years, completing her career at the High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice. She impacted hundreds of students in her career and helped to make college a possibility for many students who would not have been able to attend without her determination, encouragement, and advice.

While at Hampton University, she was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Gamma lota Chapter in 1953. She was elected vice president of the undergraduate chapter the following year. She took great pride in volunteering with the Houston Alumnae chapter as chaplain and she chaired the Health, May Week and Fundraising Committees. She served on the Housing Board and the Social Action, Nominating, Scholarship and Standards, Social, Founder's Day, Educational Development and Delta Youth committees. In 1997 she was selected as the Houston Alumnae Chapter Outstanding Retired Educator and Black Teacher Network Cluster winner and placed second as a state winner.

She married William McQueen Sr. in 1963 and they were married until his death in 2023. She was a faithful, lifelong member of Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Members of her family dating back to 1872 were among the founders. She created the church's Bereavement Ministry, served as church secretary for many years, and co-chaired the church's 125th anniversary celebration with her husband. Known for her humble spirit, her patience, and her winning smile, she remained committed to the institution and served on many committees over the years. Some of her closest friends were those whom she met while serving in ministry to her Lord and Savior.

Her civic service also included membership in Top Ladies of Distinction, and in 1999 she was inducted into the Hall of Famers and Community Leaders of the Texas Association of Women's and Youth Clubs.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter Mamie Andrea McLean. She leaves to cherish her memory her children Ronald Parham (Monica), William McQueen Jr. (Rosylind), and Angela Young (Darryl). Survivors also include her grandchildren, William McQueen III (Alicia); Christin McQueen; Kimber White; Shanel White; Brandon Parham (Jasmine); Martin McLean; Kelly and Travis Young (Juana); and Daniel Parham. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Caydin McQueen; Keon, Riley, and Emery Armstrong; Chloe McLean; Wesley and Sophie Young; Elijah and Eason Parham; Lennox and Edison Brickham. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Ealier Mae Ross and Doretha Denson; brothers-in-law L.V. McQueen (Ruthie) and Monroe Wilson; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

She will also be missed by her special lifelong friend and sorority sister Lady Rose Mary McGowen.
