Rev. George Cartwright

Rev. George Cartwright, “Preacher,” was born April 17, 1937 in Center, Texas, Shelby County, to the late Mr. William Allen and Mrs. Fanata Cartwright. At an early age, he united with and was baptized by the East Liberty Baptist Church. He transitioned Thursday, April 9, 2026.

Reverend George Cartwright attended East Liberty High School and was drafted into the U. S. Army. After completing his Army duty, he attended Prairie View A & M University where he completed the study of Electricity. Rev. Cartwright married Miss Gladys Faye Lewis on April 10, 1976, and they were married for almost 50 years. They are the proud parents of Gerard Vincent Cartwright and the late George Wesley Cartwright.

Under the ministry of Rev. Acy Doyal McCraw at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Rev. George Cartwright was ordained into ministry. In May of 1972, he became the Pastor of the Mt. Horeb Baptist Church in Blandlake, Texas. During his pastorship, he also served as the third Moderator of the Sabine Valley District Association. Since 1987, he moderated 27 churches for 30 years. He was responsible for guiding their spiritual teaching and leadership. He thoroughly enjoyed guiding the youth and working with adults. After serving as Pastor of Mt. Horeb Baptist Church for 45 years, and commuting weekly between Houston to East Texas, he retired as Pastor and Moderator in May of 2017.

Using his God given foresight, he orchestrated the building of an attached fellowship hall. The fellowship hall was later named after him in his honor.

During his life, he enjoyed studying God’s word, hunting, fishing, gardening, and attended the BM&E State and National Convention. As a husband and father, he enjoyed taking care of his family. As a man of God, Rev. George Cartwright demonstrated kindness, love, integrity, and cherished interactions with his family and everyone he met. As a father, he instilled wisdom, discipline, care, and love in his sons.

The Rev. George Cartwright and his wife are long standing members of New Spirit of Life Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Charles Gaines.

Preceding him in death are his parents, 7 sisters, 3 brothers, and his son George Wesley Cartwright. He leaves his wife, Gladys Faye Cartwright, and son, Gerard Vincent Cartwright of Houston, Texas; Sister-n- Law, Anne Cartwright, along with nieces, nephews, and a host of many other relatives and friends.
