Robert Allen Batteaux was born to Lois Ersula Jones and Robert Christopher Batteaux on July 24, 1945, in Houston, Texas.

He received his primary and secondary education from the Houston Independent School District, graduating in 1963 from Phyllis Wheatly High School. While at Wheatly he played basketball and tennis and was voted best male athlete of his class.

Robert began his higher education at Prairie View A&M University on a basketball and tennis athletic scholarship.   While at Prairie View, he was a two-year letterman in Basketball and a four-year letterman in Tennis, where he was captain from 66-67.  For four years he was an All-SWAC Performer in Tennis.  Robert was a key member of the PV Tennis team that advanced to the Championship round of the NAIA Tournament and placed fifth in the nation.   The team won four consecutive SWAC Championships.  The doubles team of Robert Batteaux and Donald Bennett were SWAC Doubles Champions from 1964-66.  Robert was also the SWAC Champion in Singles play for two years before graduating. In 2010 he was inducted into the Prairie View A&M University Sports Hall of Fame for Basketball and Tennis.

Robert obtained a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1968.  After serving his country for two years in the U.S. Army, he obtained a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Prairie View A&M University and a Master of Science in Physical Education at Texas Southern University.  Robert taught Physical Education on all levels during his career with HISD. He touched the lives of many children as a teacher and coach and later Director of Barnett Sports Complex in the Houston Independent School District, a responsibility he thoroughly enjoyed.

He had many successful coaching experiences with district championship teams in basketball, golf and tennis. Also in 2010 Robert was inducted into the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

He was also a faculty member for the Houston Community College System in Physical Education, developing the first Physical Education Manual and Jazzercise exercise programs.   His other love was his position as Facilities and Sports Program Coordinator for Precinct One, Harris County, El Franco Lee, Commissioner, where he coordinated the annual Street Olympics program in Houston.

One principle Robert lived by and instilled in his sons is to "always to be kind and good to others". He had a magnetic personality that drew people to him and they "stuck", developing lifelong relationships. He was loved by many and will be truly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lois Queen and Robert C. Batteaux. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 54 years and college sweetheart, Patricia Davis Batteaux; his sons, Robert Anthony, Patrick Alan and Roderick Warren (Ashley); granddaughters Brooke Noelle and Callie Reece; nieces Ursula Yvette Foley and Cathy L. Preadom (Byron) and a host of other relatives and loyal friends.
