Roy Eugene
Baker
Oct 28, 1942 — Jan 7, 2025
Roy Eugene Baker was born on October 28, 1942, in Houston, Texas, to Celester Raford Baker and Leola Mae Baker. As the eldest of his siblings, he naturally took on the role of a leader and protector. His brothers and sisters include Maxine Louise Elmore (deceased), Celester William Baker, Jr. (deceased), Charles Gene Baker (deceased), Exie Laverne Donaldson (deceased), Charlotte Rose Hall (Donald), Larry Raford Baker (Clara Jean), John Jerry Baker (deceased), and Carl Watt Baker.
Roy spent part of his early childhood in Ennis, Texas, where he was baptized at Saint Delight United Methodist Church, cementing a foundation of faith that would guide him throughout his life. He later returned to Houston and graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1960.
In September 1966, Roy answered the call to serve his country. He was drafted into the United States Army, where he proudly served until January 1968, earning an Honorable Discharge. His time in the military exemplified his strength, resilience, and selflessness—qualities that defined his life and he always carried with him.
Roy was a man of hard work and integrity, holding various jobs that spanned from cafeteria worker to warehouse manager. No matter the role, his focus was always on providing for his family and helping others. He was not just a brother but a caretaker, a mentor, and a father figure. He was a man who would gladly give his last to help someone in need, embodying the spirit of generosity, kindness, and strength.
In 1976, Roy married the love of his life, Beverly Joyce Baldwin. Together, they built a loving home filled with laughter, support, and countless cherished memories. Roy embraced Beverly's two sons, Rodney and Jermaine, raising them as his own. Together, they completed their family with the birth of their daughter, Kimberly. Roy's greatest joy was his family, and he devoted his life to ensuring their happiness.
After many years of dedicated service, Roy retired from Simpson Paper Company in 2004. Retirement gave him more time to spend with his beloved family, including his five grandchildren: Jamarquis Drewery (Haroiana), Xavier Baldwin, Cameron Baldwin, Kennedy Phillips, Yemahri Drewery, as well as his great-granddaughter, Ja'Miyah Drewery. To them, he was affectionately known as "PaPa," a role he cherished with all his heart.
Roy had a love for traveling and often returned to Ennis to reconnect with his family and cherished roots. A devoted Houston Texans fan, he found joy in cheering for his team. Dining at his favorite restaurant, Perry's Steakhouse, was a special treat, where he never missed an opportunity to order what he fondly called the "poke chop." At home, Roy could often be found relaxing in his recliner, enjoying his favorite television shows, The Price is Right and The Bold and the Beautiful. Roy joined the Fountain of Praise church in August of 2022 where he faithfully attended 8 a.m. Sunday service.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 48 years, Beverly Baker, his three children, Rodney, Jermaine, and Kimberly, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who were blessed to know him.
Rest well, Roy/Daddy/Papa. You will forever be missed, but your strength, kindness, and love will remain in our hearts forever.
