Obituary

Shirley Mae Barnes, a beloved matriarch, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother departed this world on Monday afternoon, January 13, 2025, at the age of 91. Her love and the love she received will forever be remembered.

Shirley was the youngest of four children born March 20, 1933, to Henry and Mabel Young in Thibodeaux, Louisiana.

Shirley married the love of her life, Johnel, in 1950, and to this union, three children were born: Karen, Kelby, and Pamela. Shortly after marrying, Shirley and her husband moved to Houston, where they would later call home. They resided in the fifth ward area for many years before settling in her current home in the South Park neighborhood of Houston, TX.

Shirley's life was guided by her strong faith. She was baptized at an early age and was a dedicated member of several churches, including Galilee MBC, Pure Light MBC, and Outreach MBC, where she joined the Eastern Star.

Shirley's love for her family was unwavering. She enjoyed spending time with them and was known as the life of the party. Her excellent cooking skills were a testament to her love; her family and friends knew where to stop for a good Sunday meal or holiday feast.

She is preceded in death by her parents and three of her siblings: her husband of forty-nine years, Johnel, and grandson, Derrick.

Shirley is survived by her three children, Karen, Kelby and Pamela. Three grandchildren, Tanisha, Terri (Eric), and Krystal. Eight great-grandchildren, a host of great-great grandchildren, her best friend Margie Young, family and friends.
