In Opelousas, Louisianas, on the blessed day of August 19, 1945 – Shirley was born the 11th of
11 children to Christian parents, George Warner and Ellen Batiste Rosette, both of whom
preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were six brothers: George, Jr, (1928)
Robert Lee (2004), James Calvin (2006), Mervin Gilbert (2010), Arthur Gene & Earl (2017);
two sisters – Ellen Rosette Deville (2020), and Mary Hailey (2022). The childrearing that was
continuously deposited on Shirley's life by loving and caring parents so afforded her a
remarkable life of 80 years.
Shirley accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist
Church under the leadership of Rev. S.A. Crowder of Opelousas. While Shirley attended J. S.
Clark High School in Opelousas, Louisiana, she was an outstanding basketball player in the
guard position and was a graduate of the class of 1963.
Shirley moved to Houston, Texas in 1963 and married Peter who preceded her in death. Into
this union, two children were born – Dennis George O'Quinn; who also proceeded her in death,
and Michael Cornel. Shirley joined Mount Hebron Missionary Baptist Church, under the
leadership of the late Dr. J. J. Roberson and continued worship under Dr. Max A. Miller, Jr.
until her passing.
Shirley affectionately called "Momma Dear" - enjoyed life immensely and loved family
gatherings. Shirley enjoyed life, reading love stories, watching Murder She Wrote and
planning family social events. During in climate weather, Shirley's home was used as a safe
haven for all who needed/wanted shelter. She was an avid sports enthusiast to include actually
playing tennis. She strongly believed that every house should be pristine cleaned before going
to bed. She enjoyed cleaning and cooking. Her work experience led her to retail, banking,
custodial services, certified nursing assistant, and lastly CEO of RNB Encantada House – an
adult healthcare facility.
Shirley departed this earthly life on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. Her predestined date to
return home has been fulfilled. She leaves in God's care: one son – Michael Cornell (Deneeka);
one granddaughter – Micaela De'nae; one grandson – Michael Cornell, II; one sister – Georgia
Guillory; one brother - Don Rosette (June); 2 sisters-in-law: Sybil McCray, and Ann Rosette;
two Godchildren: Jacqueline Pierce, and Blaine Rosette; a special cousin– Gilda Batiste Evans;
special friends – Jennie Banks-Barrett and Gabrielle Louis, along with a cornucopia of nieces,
nephews, relatives, and friends from far and near.
