A Life Remembered
Shirley Anne Winston was born on November 10, 1948, in Monroe, Louisiana, to Willie Winston and Clara Mae Jones-Winston.
She received her early education in Rayville, Louisiana, and later moved to Texas, where she attended Texas City Independent School District (TCISD). She continued her education at the College of the Mainland in Texas City, Texas, before making her home in Houston.
After arriving in Houston, Shirley united with Bethel Baptist Church on Andrew Street in Fourth Ward under the leadership of the late Rev. M. A. Nimmo. She joined the Young Adult Usher Board and later served as its instructor for many years. Shirley also served faithfully in other areas of the church, including the Sunday School, where she taught with dedication, and the Adult Usher Board until she could no longer serve. She also helped establish the church’s first food pantry under the leadership of Rev. M. A. Nimmo. Shirley loved her church and accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age.
Shirley worked for many years as a cook at the Coronado Club in Houston. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards, bingo, and dancing in her spare time.
On July 7,2026, Shirley peacefully entered eternal rest leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and devotion to God and her family.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Winston and Clara Mae Jones-Winston; her son, Rodrick Winston; and her brother, Anthony Jones.
Left to cherish her precious memories are her beloved grandchildren; Bria Reece-Winston and Casey Winston; three great-grandchildren, Londyn Dorn, Jace Green, and Leightyn Green; sisters, Ola Mack, Debra Price, Fay Guillory, Jeanette Jones-Wilson, Margie Jones, Annette Smith, Veronica Jones, and Tonia Macklin; and brother, Johnnie Anderson (Essie).
