Steven's Story

In the Summer of 1970, Steven was born. His bright-eyed and beautiful sister was excited about the arrival of her bouncing new baby brother.

Steven professed his faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized.  He continued to grow in his faith and diligently sought to apply the principles he learned from the Holy Scriptures.

Steven was a very bright student in school.  He loved sports and was an integral part of his league baseball team, track team, and football team as a youth. As a teenager, he and his cousin recorded a studio single rap song called "Wise Up" with the help of his stepfather. Steven loved learning new things.  He was especially gifted in writing and loved Language Arts and History.

Steven attended college and received an associate degree. His academic ability, coupled with his desire to grow, led him to continue his education, so he attended the state university, where he majored in general studies.

As a young man, Steven wed, and to this union were born two beautiful children.  Anyone who knew Steven knew that he loved his children deeply and they were indeed his pride and joy.

Many years later, after moving to Houston, Steven met and later married DeAnza Michelle Sampson.  It was through this union that he became a member of a baptist church, where he was on staff for a period of time.

In his work life, Steven was extremely talented, and there was no area he was afraid to tackle.  He was always considered a valuable employee because of his incredibly strong work ethic. He received several acknowledgements for going above and beyond the call of duty without having to be asked. There was no doubt that his greatest passion was cooking.  Anyone who knew him would easily say that he was one of the best cooks this side of heaven!  His passion, his love, and his charisma were infectious.  He loved entertaining people and making them laugh.  He was an encourager and got great joy from building up others.

Steven loved The Lord with all of His heart and made it his assignment to tell others about Jesus. He even led a few Bible Study groups over the years, where he was able to share an insightful and revelatory understanding of The Word of God. He was friendly, kind, generous, and compassionate.  For those he loved, there was nothing he wouldn't do.

Steven was known for the fact that he never forgot a thing. Once he knew something, he remembered every detail of when and where it happened, even the most (seemingly) insignificant details. Following current events was another favorite pastime of Steven. You could always depend on him to keep you updated on local and national news, as well as what was going on in the world of politics. In addition to that, he was an excellent storyteller. There were many life lessons in the stories he told, although that was not necessarily his intention. By the time he finished telling his story, you realized he had been dropping little gems the entire time. Some were heartwarming, and some were entertaining. Steven never met a stranger and was able to bring joy to many people with little effort.

On Thursday, February 22, 2024, our dearly beloved Steven went to be with His Father, whom he dearly loved, and got promoted to a brand-new life.  We are comforted in knowing he is with Our Lord and Savior, resting in the peace of God with his loving, compassionate, and sacrificial mother, whom he grieved until the day he departed this life.

Steven will forever be remembered for his incredible capacity to love. In him, God truly gave a gift and many, many memories that will be cherished forever.
