Tommie La Verne (Fitch) Walter

Tommie La Verne Fitch Walter was born on November 24, 1946, in Houston, Texas, to Albert C. Fitch and Harryette Bryant Davis. Raised in Houston’s Acres Homes community, Tommie built a life rooted in family, faith, service, and care for others.

She attended Booker T. Washington High School, where she graduated before beginning a career as an Administrative Assistant within the Houston and Galveston medical systems. Throughout her professional life, she brought the same dependable and caring spirit to her work that characterized so much of her personal life.

Tommie dedicated her life to Christ at an early age, and her faith remained an important foundation throughout her life. In 2016, she became a dedicated member of Greater New Hope Church in Houston, Texas, under the leadership of Pastor Robert Bailey, Jr. She faithfully served through the Salt of the Earth (SOTE) Seniors Ministry and the Wisdom Well Podcast Ministry, finding fellowship and purpose within her church family.

Those who knew Tommie knew her servant’s heart. She was a woman who cared deeply for her family and willingly stepped in when someone needed support. Throughout the years, she helped care for several loved ones during the final seasons of their lives, offering her time, presence, and compassion without hesitation.

Tommie appreciated life’s simple pleasures. She enjoyed her trips to Walmart, settling in with her favorite classic television programs, spending time with family and friends, diet Coke, tea cakes, her smokes, and being part of the community around her.

Tommie eventually made Houston Heights her home. For the final 15 years of her life, she was part of the loving community at Independent Heights Apartments, where she developed friendships and connections that became an important part of her later years.

Tommie shared her life with her husband, Archie Walter Jr., who preceded her in death in 1989. She was the mother of Annetta Jackson and Kevin Jackson, and the grandmother of Candice Jackson and Christopher Jackson.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Albert C. Fitch and Harryette Bryant Davis; her sister, Lavada Louise Dunn, and her son, Kevin Jackson.

On July 26, 2026, at the age of 79, Tommie completed her earthly journey. She leaves to cherish her memory her brother, Napoleon Leon Fitch; nieces, Shenette Prevo and husband Lamar Prevo, and Lanore Fitch-McGill and husband Cedric McGill; nephew, Swanye Smith; great-nieces and great-nephews; one great-great-niece; and a host of cousins, extended family members, church family, neighbors, and dear friends.

Tommie’s life was marked not simply by the years she lived, but by the people she helped along the way. Her willingness to serve, care, support, and simply be there when someone needed her will remain a lasting part of her legacy.

Though she will be deeply missed, the love she gave and the lives she touched will continue to speak for her.
