Obituary

Travis Amboree was born to the late James and Harriet Amboree on July 7, 1922, in Pledger, Texas. After a life well-lived, he was peacefully called home on September 24, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories for all those who were blessed to know him.

He grew up on a small farm in Pledger, TX with his parents and 10 siblings. He cared deeply for his family and considered others over himself. He sacrificed his own plans to allow his little sister to pursue her education and was always proud of her accomplishments. When they grew up, he took charge in ensuring that he and his siblings purchased property for their parents to leave the farm where they worked as sharecroppers and move to their own residence in town.

He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Grove Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Pledger, Texas. He attended Williams High School in Pledger before being drafted into the United States Army in 1942. He was a World War II Veteran and served in the 369th infantry 93rd division until 1946.

He retired from working as a cook at the Veterans Affairs (VA) for 35 years. He also worked as a landscaper alongside his brother John "JD" for many years and took great pride in his work as he meticulously cared for each lawn with great precision. He also owned several rental properties and was always compassionate and responsive to his tenants.

He was a long-standing member of East Macedonia Baptist Church for over 70 years where he served in several ministries and was a member of the male chorus.

He married Frankie Woodard on January 9, 1948, and she gave birth to his only child Thomas "Sack" Lemon, Jr. He later married Lucille Stewart on March 3, 1952, and they remained united in holy matrimony until her death in 1997.

Travis will be remembered for his hard-working nature, keen attention to detail, and steadfast integrity. He was a great mentor and role model to many young men within his congregation, his family, and the wider community. Throughout his life, Travis exemplified strength of character and left behind a legacy of influence, faith, and honor. He will be remembered for frequently saying he was "hanging on by the eyelids" when asked how he was doing.

He was preceded in death by his parents: James and Harriett Amboree; wife: Lucille Amboree; his special friend: Pauline Anderson-Jones; son: Thomas Lemon, Jr.; brothers: Orange Amboree; Floyd Amboree; Junius Amboree; Rev. Clarence "CW" Amboree; John "JD" Amboree; and Hilliard Amboree; sisters: Ruby Williams; Ruth Marshall; and Sidney Higgins.
