Obituary

Vanessa Morris Mitchell, age 61, of Galveston, Texas, entered eternal rest on January 6, 2026. She was born on November 14, 1964, in Galveston, Texas, to James Morris and Irene Leonard.

Vanessa was united in marriage to Eugene Mitchell. She was a devoted and loving mother to Valencia Martin, Timothy Martin/Elzy, Jr, Jackquienslyn Smith, and Bianca Larzo. Vanessa took great pride in her role as "Mema" to her cherished grandchildren: A'Maya Smith, Layla Hall, Maya Johnson, Zachary Smith, and Ascari Dos Ramos.

She is lovingly remembered by her siblings, Felicia Morris and Cotis Leonard, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, and dear friends whose lives she touched.

Vanessa pursued her education with dedication, earning an Associate's Degree in Medical Assisting from the Texas School of Business. She later followed her creative passion by studying photography at Houston Community College, where she honed her gift for capturing life's meaningful moments. Professionally, Vanessa worked as an Image Review Clerk at Tx Tag, where she was known for her diligence, commitment, and integrity.

A faithful servant of God, Vanessa was an active member of Bethel Church. Her faith was not only spoken but lived daily. She was known as a prayer warrior who believed deeply in giving, serving, and loving without condition. Vanessa found joy in feeding the homeless, helping strangers in need, caring for animals, singing in the choir, cooking meals filled with love, and spending time with her family. Music was one of her great pleasures, especially songs by Beyoncé, CeCe Winans, Charlie Wilson, and Smokey Robinson.

Above all, Vanessa will be remembered for her generous heart, unwavering faith, strength through adversity, and the light she carried into every room. She was a mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
