Obituary

Vernell Louise Lewis Carter was born on December 13, 1928 in Nacogdoches, Texas to the late Kitty Lou Cummings and Joe Pittman. She attended Nacogdoches public schools where she went on to receive a certificate as a Data Entry Accountant. This allowed her to have a prosperous career working at Methodist Hospital close to 20 years.

After moving to Houston, Texas she meet and married L.C. Lewis in 1947 and this union welcomed six children: Tanza Abdullah, Lois C. Lane (deceased), Larry C. Lewis, Sr., Craig Lewis (deceased), Bart Everett Lewis, and Brigott Lewis.

After the death of her first husband, she went on to meet and marry her eternal sole mate, Daniel G. Carter. The two wed on August 5, 1974 at Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she was a devoted and dedicated member. Vernell and Dan were inseparable and exuded a love that was unmatched. So much so that the two departed this life on the same day, January 3rd, sixteen years apart.

Vernell will be remembered for her sweet perfume smells, her sense of style, collecting sentimental reminders, enjoying cooking shows, her humorous colloquialisms and most importantly spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her darling mother Kitty Cummings, her loving husband Daniel Carter, her daughter Lois C. Lane, her son Craig Lewis, her grandson Jonathon Lewis, and her great-granddaughter Amonee' El-Amin.

Left to cherish Vernell's memory are her two daughters Tanza Abdullah and Brigott Lewis, her two sons Larry C. Lewis (Sharon) and Bart Everett Lewis (Tamra), her cousin Ronnie Simpson, her 11 grandchildren, LaKisha Koonce (Rodney), LaKaysha Jones (Nate), Taheera Shelton, Jarrod Lewis (Antoinette), Khalidah Lee, Zatrik El-Amin, Rashon Lewis, Ruguyyah Abdullah, LaChandra Anderson, Larry Lewis, Jr. (Karissa), Brandon Lewis (Dianna) and her 30 great grandchildren.
