Wendell Brady Coleman was born on March 29th, 1949, in San Antonio Texas to the late Johnnie Lee Coleman and Marine Hodge Coleman. Wendell was the 2nd of seven siblings. Wendell attended Booker T. Washington High School in San Antonio Texas. His family then moved to Kaiserslautern Berlin, Germany, where his dad was stationed in the United States Army. After several years of military duty, the family returned to the United States. Wendell went on to attend Phyllis Wheatley High School in San Antonio Texas and graduated with honors. With a desire to further his education, Wendell later attended Prairie View A&M University receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master's Degreein Reading in 2002. While attending Prairie View A&M University. Wendell made the decision to join the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated.
Wendell exemplified Phi Beta Sigma's principles of Brotherhood, Scholarships, and service throughout his lifetime. Wendell made significant contributions to both his local community and the fraternity at large. The Phi Beta Sigma fraternity acknowledged Wendell for an unwavering commitment to foster positive change and uplift those around him. Wendell will be remembered as a testament to the values he held. Wendell passing leaves a void in our hearts, but his legacy of service and camaraderie will endure and inspire future generations to continue the noble pursuits he held so dearly.
Wendell accepted Jesus Christ in his life at an early age. Wendell was united in holy matrimony on June 25, 1983, to Ella Marie (Relerford) Wilhite who was the love of his life. To this union, they blended their family together which consisted of a daughter (Lesley) and a son (Oscar)
After moving to Houston Texas, Wendell and Ella became a part of New Light Christian Center Family Church on November 15th, 1987, under the leadership of Pastor I. V. Hilliard and Pastor Bridget Hilliard. In 2018, their growth continued under the leadership of Senior Pastor Dr. Irishea Hilliard. The teaching of God's word changed Wendell's life. Due to Wendell's faithful service and commitment, Wendell was appointed as a deacon. Deacon Coleman was later assigned as a Board Member serving in several Excellence Team ministries which included: Usher, Children's Church Minister, Videographer, Choir and Personal Ministry. Deacon Coleman attended the New Light Christian College of Ministry graduating from the Light Bible Institute and Ministry of Development Institute where he became a minister. Minister Coleman often said, "New Light will always be my church home".
Wendell passed away on December 29th, 2023, in Sugar Land Texas. Minister Coleman was preceded in death by his parents; Johnny Lee Coleman and Marine Coleman, two sisters; Myrtle Poullard and Jeanetta Marie Osaghae.
Minister Coleman leaves to cherish his loving memories, his loving wife Ella Coleman, daughter, Lesley Coleman "Garner Burks", (Anthony), New Braunfels, son, Oscar E. Wilhite III, (Lisa), Missouri City Texas; 5 grandchildren; Dairyell Garner II, Ebony Wilhite, Konstance Garner, Merriah Wilhite and Oscar E. Wilhite IV and three great grandchildren; Santana Garner, Haile J. Lang and Park Russell; 4 Siblings; Mary Hunter, Patricia Harvey, Michael Coleman and Johnnie Coleman, all of San Antonio Texas and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
