Marvin "Coach" Pettway Marvin Pettway was born in Mobile, Alabama on August 12, 1935 to the late Gideon Pettway Sr. and Annie (Morgan) Pettway. His family, which included four brothers, moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1944. Marvin graduated from Sidney D. Miller High School on June 25, 1954 and received a scholarship to attend Texas Southern University. While at TSU, Marvin played football and ran track. He received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from TSU.
Marvin was an avid sportsman, tough competitor, and devoted coach. He played for the Harlem Road Kings Basketball Organization for five years. He also played with the Houston Softball Association. In the 1960's, Marvin tried out for the Houston Astros.
Marvin worked for Houston Independent School District for many years where he coached at Jack Yates H.S., Jefferson Davis H.S., Lee H.S., Ryan Junior High, Black Junior High, and E.O. Smith Junior High. In addition, he taught swimming and managed various parks and recreational programs.
Coach Pettway taught, mentored, and invested in the lives of many young people. He left a lasting impression on so many of his students.
Marvin leaves to cherish his memory his son, Rodney Earl Pettway, and a host of family and friends in Michigan, Minnesota, Alabama, Florida and other parts the country.
